He gained the rank of Captain in 1914 in the service of the Norfolk Royal Field Artillery. He fought in the First World War. He gained the rank of Major between 1915 and 1916 in the service of the Royal Fusiliers. He was Colonel commanding of the 2nd/4th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment between 1916 and 1917. He was Colonel commanding of the 2nd/5th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry between 1917 and 1918. He was Aide-de-Camp of the Personal Staff in 1919. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the Reserve Officers."
