Joseph Howes was b.c. 1634 in England, the s/o Thomas Howes and Mary Burr. After his father died in Oct. 1665, his mother married Gov. Thomas Prence by Aug. 1668 as his fourth wife. Joseph Howes d. Jan. 19, 1694/95 in Yarmouth, MA. His will was written Jan. 17, 1694/95 and inventory was taken Jan. 30, 1694/95. Known children of Elizabeth Mayo and Joseph Howes were: a. Samuel: b.c. 1654; m. Rebecca Nicholas. b. Joseph: b.c. 1656; m. Mary Vincent. c. John: b.c. 1658; m. Elizabeth Paddock; m. Mary Matthews. d. Nathaniel: b.c. 1659; m. Mary Ryder. e. Thomas: b.c. 1660; m. Rebecca Howes. f. Amos: b.c. 1662; m. Susannah Hedge. g. Mary: b.c. 1664; m. John Hallet Feb. 16, 1681/82 in Yarmouth, MA. h. Elizabeth: b.c. 1666; m. Joseph Merrick. i. Hannah: b.c. 1673; m. William Matthews Dec. 15, 1698 in Yarmouth, MA. I have further information about Samuel, Joseph, John, Nathaniel, Thomas, Amos, and Elizabeth and their lines of descent, from the children listed above. My source for the above information is "Rev. John Mayo and His Descendants" by Jean Mayo Rodwick, published in 2001. Immigrant ancestor, Thomas Howes, married Mary Burr, and came from Norfolk, England. Thomas and his wife were in Salem, MA in 1637 where they first landed. They brought with them 3 sons, Joseph, Thomas, and Jeremiah.Joseph went on to marry Rev. John Mayo's daughter, Elizabeth Mayo. They lived in the Nobscusset area of Yarmouth, MA in present day Dennis.Jeremiah was the last born on the passage over to America. There is evidence that they lived in Lynn, MA at some point before coming to Cape Cod to permanently settle. They lived in the vicinity of Beach Street and New Boston Road in present day Dennis."
