[14700] John III (of Portugal)(aka João III Le Pieux), king of Portugal (1521-57), the son of King Emanuel. At his accession Portugal was at the height of its power, but during his reign its influence began to wane. Colonial enterprise, however, continued; Portuguese title to Brazil was confirmed by the Congress of Badajoz in 1524 and the country's Asian possessions were expanded. John established the Inquisition in Portugal in 1531, under his brother Henry, who later became king. John also allowed the Jesuits to enter the country in 1540, and their influence in education became dominant toward the end of his reign.
