Wendell was born on March 26, 1938, to Phyllis (Grant) Small and Douglas R. Small Sr. Wendell was proud to tell you he had served in the United States Coast Guard and learned to love the water. Wendell returned to Lubec, where he would meet the mother of his beloved son, Wendell Troy. He moved his family to Connecticut, where he was employed with Hartford Hospital. Wendell soon returned to the water through diving and commercial fishing. Wendell was known locally as quite an outdoorsman whether it be in the woods with his good friend of 20 years, Jack Bragg or on the water fishing. Wendell had a deep love for music and dancing where he met his partner, Jean Mathews, they could be found weekly spinning around a dance floor. Wendell will be remembered by all that had the honor to know him as a tall, kind, compassionate man.
