His father, John, was a linen draper "of Stogursey, Somersetshire." {-also see articles in "N. E. Hist. & Genealogical Register," 102:169-177; 140:180-181 - giving data on his four marriages and his legal troubles in England.} George was one of the earliest inhabitants of present-day Portland, Maine; was residing at the mouth of the Spurwink River, Cape Elizabeth, 1630, where he claimed 2,000 acres which Sir Ferdinand Gorges had promised him as a condition of his emigration from England -- but he was ousted from this claim and located where the business section of the city stands today (near Hancock and Fore Streets); he led the struggle for an independent colony in Maine called Ligonia, and for 12 years served as its chief of state (until Massachusetts' claims prevailed in 1658); he was in and out of court for many years trying to assert his property claims; he served in the General Court and other offices. He was a "roundhead" and struggled with the Episcopalians. He died past age 90 and was probably past age 55 when he emigrated from England.

[18623] Sarah, second wife of Ichabod Grindle, is daughter of Joseph Dow and Judith Butman who m. at Amesbury, MA 11 January 1731. See "The Book of Dow," R. P. Dow (1929). In 1845/46 an old lady named "Miss Ichabod" was living with Judith Grindle and is presumed to be her mother [ - "The Grindle Family of Hancock County, Maine" (1978), p. 17]. Ancestry.com offers: "Dow Name Meaning - Scottish (also found in Ireland): reduced form of McDow. This surname is borne by a sept of the Buchanans. English: variant of Daw. Americanized spelling of Dutch Douw, an Old Frisian personal name. Americanized spelling of German Dau."

She was born Oct. 13, 1938 in Castine, the daughter of James and Esther (Leach) Hutchins. She graduated from Bucksport High School, Class of 1956, Farmington State Teachers College in 1960. She taught junior high school in Skowhegan from 1960 to 1963. In 1963 Ellen went to Earle C. McGraw School in Hampden where she taught until illness forced her to retire in 1993. Her last year she worked as a file clerk at the Crookers Insurance Agency in Bucksport. She belonged to the Franklin Street United Methodist Church the M.T.A & N.E.A. Ellen loved gardening, the outdoors and spending time at her camp on Hart's Pond. She is survived by a brother, James Hutchins, Jr. of Poland Springs, sister, Judith and her husband Richard Gross of Bucksport, also many special nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and special friends. Ellen leaves her devoted animals, Fine Electro, Sunday, Kelly, Eddie, Jessica, and Sydney and all the students that were in her classrooms over the 33 years that she taught. She was predeceased by her mother, Esther, in 1975, her father, James, in 1989, and her brother, Stuart, in 1994."
