[15897] He tried unsuccessfully to stave off the crisis that led to the American Civil War. He was the son of prosperous Scotch-Irish Presbyterians. After graduating from Dickinson College, he studied law in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where in 1812 he was admitted to the bar and soon established a flourishing practice. An able and resourceful advocate, he moved freely in society and enjoyed the company of women, but after the early death of a fiancée who had broken with him, he remained a bachelor. Early Career - A Federalist in politics, Buchanan was twice elected to the Pennsylvania General Assembly (1814, 1815), and in 1821 he entered the U.S. Congress. Eventually joining the coalition that in 1828 elected Andrew Jackson president, he became a loyal Democrat, although he generally remained a moderate on such partisan issues as tariff and bank policies. After briefly serving (1832-33) as minister to Russia, Buchanan was elected U.S. senator from Pennsylvania. A conciliator rather than an innovator, he sought to harmonize the various factions of the Democratic party. In 1845 he became President James K. Polk's secretary of state, a position in which he again counseled moderation, particularly in connection with annexations in Mexico and Oregon. In 1852 President Franklin Pierce appointed him minister to Great Britain, a mission that kept him away from the country during the Kansas-Nebraska Act controversy. He incurred criticism by joining the U.S. ambassadors to Spain and France in signing the Ostend Manifesto (1854), which declared the U.S.'s right to take Cuba by force should efforts to purchase the slaveholding island fail. Nevertheless, two years later he won his party's nomination for the presidency. The Presidency - In 1856 Buchanan defeated John C. Frémont, a Republican, and the former president Millard Fillmore, a Whig, in their bid for the presidency. Acceptable both to Northern Democrats and Southern moderates, he ran on a platform of popular sovereignty (the right of settlers in a territory to decide whether or not to sanction slavery). Within two days of his inauguration, however, in the Dred Scott decision, of which he had prior knowledge, the U.S. Supreme Court held that the Constitution protected slavery in all territories. The president's difficulties multiplied with the depression caused by the Panic of 1857 and with his support for the admission of Kansas to the Union as a slave state. This aroused opposition in Buchanan's own party. Seeking to steer a middle course between the widely divergent philosophies of the South and North, Buchanan was unable in 1860 to prevent the breakup of his party or afterward to reunite the factions, one of which supported Vice-President John C. Breckinridge and the other Sen. Stephen A. Douglas. In the secession crisis following the victory of Republican Abraham Lincoln, Buchanan sought to gain time to allow passions to cool. Declaring that secession was illegal but that he had no power to prevent it, he attempted to preserve the peace by not provoking secessionists. Stiffening somewhat after the reorganization of his cabinet, he refused Southern demands that federal troops be ordered to abandon Fort Sumter in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina. His efforts to supply the fort failed, however, as did his plans for a constitutional convention. He left office disappointed and discredited. Well-intentioned and dignified, but a weak executive, Buchanan had the misfortune of holding office during an extremely difficult period.

He was the son of Jacob Christ and Susanna Gross and was baptized on 31 May 1794 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Reading, Berks Co., PA. He married Anna Maria Hepler on 1 May 1814 in Upper Mahanoy Twp., Northumberland Co., PA. They had 8 children: Solomon, Catharina, Lucetia, Emanuel Jr., Maria, Elias, Isaac and John. Emanuel worked in Lumber/Agriculture and as a Blacksmith. He died in the Mahantongo Valley when only 37 years of age. NOTE: Emanuel had a brother, Jonathan, who was misrepresented as the father of Catharina (Christ) Masser in Floyd's "Genealogical and Biographical Annals of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania" (p. 498). Emanuel's middle name, if any, is not known to family researchers."

[1235] Thomas came to Medford, MA in 1635; was a prominent member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Co.; was a missionary to the Native Americans (Indians). {-See "The Genealogical Advertizer," Vol. 4 (1901), p. 1.} He owned Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and Elizabeth islands and was Governor of Martha's Vineyard. He settled Edgartown, 1658-81. He lived to age 90. His son, the Rev. (Thomas, Jr. or) John Mayhew, was first missionary on Martha's Vineyard, 1642-57; he died at sea en route to England at age 37 and his father, the Governor, succeeded him as missionary pastor. Cf. "Old Nantucket the Faraway Island," William O. Stevens; "History of Tilton Family in America," F. T. Tilton, pp. 152-3; "History of Martha's Vineyard...," Charles Edward Banks (Dukes County, MA, Historical Society, 1966, 3 vols.) In England Thomas was a merchant apprentice of Richard Macey of Northampton before emigrating in 1631. He moved from Watertown to Martha's Vineyard, living there permanently from 1674. He and his family are detailed in "The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England, 1620-1633"( Boston: NEHGS, 1995, Vol. 2, pp. 243-246. See "Thomas Mayhew, 1592-1682" published by Duke's County Historical Society, Edgartown, MA, 1936 for his seal, will, etc. Charles Edward Banks, "Colonial Families of Martha's Vineyard" (Baltimore: Gen. Pub. Co, reprint 1999), p. 299-300, states: "The name of his first wife is not known nor has any clue to the date and place of the mariage been found. Neither is it known when or where she died. He m. (2) Mrs. Jane (Gallion?) Paine, wid. of Mr. Thomas Paine, a London merchant, abt. 1634 (Vol. II, p. 90, Annals of Edgartown). She was living 15 May 1666, but died before her husband." Banks (loc. cit) reports that Thomas was an apprentice to Richard Masey of Southampton, England, and was admitted "a free commoner" there "to use his trader of mercer" (i.e., merchant). Banks continues (op. cit., p. 301) "Thomas Macey of Nantucket (who is said to have emigrated from Chilmark, co. Wilts), [stated] that Governor Thomas Mayhew was his 'honored cousin' . . . Thomas Mayhew was an apprentice of Richard Macy . . . a native of Chilmark and in his will of 20 Nov. 1633 he provided for his burial in that parish." Thomas came to Medford as personal busines representative of Matthew Cradock. Thomas appears on the records of the General Court of MA 6 March 1632 as chair of a committee appointed by the Cort to settle the boundary between Charlestown and Newton. On 14 May 1634 he was admitted as a Freeman. His business relationship with Cradock terminating, he moved about 1637 to Watertown, MA.
