'Junior' Gates, 72, of 12 Clark Ave. died Saturday at 11:14 a.m. in the Shelby Memorial Hospital emergency room after an apparant heart attack. Born May 12, 1916, in Galion, he was a retired employee of the Richland County Highway Department. Mr. Gates was a member of First United Church of Christ and Shelby Area Democratic Club. He was the first freshman to ever play varsity football at Shelby Senior High School. Surviving are his wife, Iona Johnston Gates, whom he married on May 15, 1942; fours sons, David of Sidney, Garland of Shelby, Bruce of Beverly Hills, Calif., and Carl of Columbus; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Patricia) Saltzgaber Jr. of Ashland; and four grandchildren."

This church is unique in having been founded [with] only male members, the female members being admitted nearly two months later. All neighboring churches were founded with both male and female members. James & Hannah Hardy moved to Tewksbury in 1764."
