The town of Newbury, MA was settled in 1638 by some principal inhabitants
of Ipswich, MA, accompanied by their pastor, Mr. Parker. In the controversy
between religious facitons raging between 1665 and 1669, Nathaniel Clark(e)
and othr prominent men are recorded on the side of Mr. Parker. Nathaniel
was granted several pieces of land and was described as a cordwainer. His will
disposed of property values at 714 pounds and included two dwellings and seven
tracts of land. Coffin's History of Newbury states that Nathaniel Clarke, Senior, died
in the Canadian expedition and this error has been repeated by others. In fact, he
died at home - it was his son, Nathaniel, who went in the expedition to Canada and
was mortally wounded in October, 1690 (NEHGR 46:188-189). His father is identified
by Don Barber (see citation under father).

'Bossonis vicecomitis, Aimerici filius eius, Adenordis vicecomitissæ' witnessed a charter dated [1082] under which 'Erchembaldus Grenulla' donated property to Saint-Jean d'Angély. Vicomte de Châtellerault. 'Boso vicecomes et uxor eius Adenors et filii eorum' donated property to St Cyprien by charter dated 1088 subscribed by 'Bosonis vicecomitis et Aenoris uxoris eius et filiorum ipsorum Aimerici et Bosonis et sororis eorum Gisberge'. 'Willelmus Goscelinus monachus Sancti Cipriani' donated property to St Cyprien by charter dated [1088] subscribed by 'Boso vicecomes, Ainors uxor, filii ipsorum Aimericus, Boso et Petrus'. 'Aimerico vicecomes de Castro Arraudi' donated property to the abbey of Fontevraud with the consent of 'Boso fratre meo' by charter dated to [1108/1115/16]. - m Amauberge [Dangeureuse], daughter of ---. 'Aimericus Castri Araudi vicecomes' donated property to Saint-Denis en Vaux on the advice of 'matris mee Adenoris et uxoris mee Dangerose fratrumque meorum Bosonis et Petri' by charter dated 1109. She left her husband to live with Guillaume IX Duke of Aquitaine, Guillaume VII Comte de Poitou, for which he was excommunicated. Orderic Vitalis recounts that 'Hildegarde Ctss de Poitou' complained to the synod of Reims, held in Oct 1119 by Pope Calixtus II, that her husband had abandoned her for 'Malberge wife of the vicomte de Châtellerault'."
