[11414] John of Austria, in Spanish, Juan de Austria (1547-78), Spanish general, an illegitimate son of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, born in Regensburg, Germany. Charles recognized his son, who was commonly called Don Juan, in his will and entrusted him to the care of his legitimate son King Philip II of Spain. In 1568 John was given the command of a squadron that operated against the Barbary pirates of North Africa, and in 1569-70 he suppressed a revolt of the Moors who were located in Granada. In 1571, when the pope, Spain, and Venice formed the Holy League to put down the Ottoman Turks, John was given supreme command of a large fleet of galleys, with which he won a great victory over the superior forces of the Turks at the naval Battle of Lepanto. He took Tunis from the Turks in 1573. In 1576 Philip II appointed him governor-general of the Netherlands, which at that time was rebelling against Spanish rule. In 1578 he defeated the Dutch in the Battle of Gembloux, but his campaign failed shortly before his death because of lack of Spanish support.

Michael Motz who served in the Continental Line according to "'Soldiers of the Revolution who received pay for their services,' Taken from Manuscript Record, having neither date nor title, but under 'Rangers on the Frontiers, 1778-1783' in the PA Archives, Series 5, Vol. 4, p. 688. He may also be the Michael Motz who is on the list of petitioners from Penn's Valley who ask to be excused from militiary service 21 Aug 1779 - PA Archives, Series 2, Vol. 3, p. 284 (cf. PA Archives, Series 3, Vol. 23, p. 257 and Series 5, Vol. 4, p. 375). "Early Pennsylvania Births, 1675-1875," Charles A. Fisher, compiler (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co.,, 2009), p. 8, lists the baptism of Elizabeth in 1783, daughter of Capt. Michael Motz and Barbara Meyer, in Zion (Morr's) Lutheran Church, which later was St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Freeburg. Fisher's "Births" (loc. cit.) also lists the baptism of John, son of Michael Motz and Barbara, 25 July 1776 in Row's (or Salem) Lutheran Church in Penn Twp., Snyder Co., PA, a bit north of Freeburg - Jacob Moyer and wife were sponsors.
