She was born March 16, 1938, in Dexter, the daughter of George and Edna (McGlauflin) Bowden. Sandra graduated from Milo High School in 1956, and wed her high school sweetheart, Dwight R. Hamlin (predeceased). After spending a brief time in California, Sandra and Dwight settled in New Hampshire to raise their family, before she eventually retired to her home state of Maine after Dwight's passing. Sandra worked many years as a professional secretary and real estate agent. She was an avid reader and had a passion for sewing and doing puzzles. However, her greatest love was her family and spending time with them at their family camp in Sebec, Maine. Sandra always welcomed you into her home and heart with open arms, making you feel comfortable as part of the family, and acquired a few extra kids over the years (including all of her grand-dogs). Everyone that came into contact with Sandy truly loved her. Sandra is survived by her children, Jeffery S. Hamlin and wife, Sharon, Kimberly M. Dimon and her husband, Charlie, and Richard M. Hamlin and fiancée, Angela Mason; 10 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; her partner, Claude Williams; and her sister, Sharon Bowden Roubo and her husband, Vic. In addition to her husband, Dwight, she was predeceased by her brother, Kenneth Bowden; stepmother, Mildred 'Mimi' Stillman Bowden; and her grandchildren, Justin B. Hamlin and Amy Bell."

[56029] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 14 March 2024: "Boxford, MA - Ronald Bruce Cunningham , 76, passed away March 13, 2024, after a courageous 14 year journey with Alzheimer's. He was born November 5, 1947, to the late Richard and Maida Cunningham of Bucksport, Maine. Like most rural Mainers of his generation, Ron grew up on a family subsistence farm where generations had made their living from the land. His childhood was filled with endless moments catching frogs in the stream, chasing siblings through potato fields, and playing marbles in the gravel pit across the road. He was taught to appreciate the land and surrounding forests, learning early on from his dad about the value of trees. Little did he know, he would begin his life's work at St. Regis Paper Company immediately after high school and spend 37 years as a dedicated maintenance technician helping transform trees into paper. In 1969, Ron met the love of his life, Candy. They knew from the start they would build meaningful lives together. They settled down a few miles from his childhood home, forged lifelong community friendships, and raised two sons, Lloyd and Matthew. Ron's work ethic was undeniably strong, and he was a devoted husband and father. His generosity was boundless, and he never passed an opportunity to help friends in need. In 2005, his life was forever changed after tragically losing his son, Lloyd. Few could recover from such a traumatic loss, but over time he and Candy rebuilt their lives and prioritized taking time to enjoy every moment together. They knew that neither the length nor quality of one's life is guaranteed and that only a fool would take their time on earth for granted. Ron was a humble, gentle soul who found pleasure in simple things. He loved a good home cooked meal, enjoyed working in his yard, and was the ultimate do-it-yourselfer. Country music was the backdrop of it all. He enjoyed traveling to Utah's high desert, the Caribbean Sea, and Hawaii's rain forests. In 2022, Ron returned home to Maine for the last time to watch his 150-year-old childhood home hoisted into the air on a 100-foot crane and repositioned onto a new foundation. Despite his disease's progression, Ron's heart burst with pride at his son's accomplishments. He was a supportive father who encouraged creativity and ambition, and he loved seeing his son build a career that embraces trees and celebrates the land. Ron is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 52 years, Candy (Merrick); as well as his son, Matthew and partner, Cody Thornton, of Boxford, Massachusetts. He was predeceased by his parents; his eldest son; and his siblings, Orin and Sheila (Gray). He is also survived by his siblings, Ivan, Stuart, Amber (Burpee), and Brent; special in-laws, Ken Gray, Bonnie Cochrane, and Perley and Karen Merrick; and his cherished out-laws, Debbie and the late Steve Thornton. He leaves behind many special nephews, nieces, friends, and coworkers and was especially grateful for his close relationships with Brenda and Dick Arnold, Nicole Cutchens, Grace Firley, Jenn Steele, Sue Radley, Joan Hawes, Margo Holmes, Billy Stubbs, Richard Powers, Dave Soper and Larraine Leonord. Ron's family extends special thanks to the compassionate memory-care community at Avita of Newburyport, where he spent the last 15 months of his life. They are angels who walk the earth, and we are grateful for his quality of life in his final days. We also want to thank Sarah's Place, Compassus Hospice, the Panaro family, and the Kubiszewski family for their support and care as the disease overtook our lives."

June 27, 1886 at Vermont, IL in Fulton Co. and passed away April 20, 1952 in his home in Panora at the age of 65 years, 9 months and 24 days. During childhood, with his parents he moved to a farm near Yale, where his mother passed away. At the early age of 11 years he went out into the world to earn his own living and grew to manhood working on farms near Yale and Panora. On Jan. 27, 1909 he was united in marriage to Clara Hitchins of Panora where they resided on a farm nearby. To this happy union were b. two daughters and a son. They moved to Bagley in 1916. Being the progressive person that he was, he achieved success in his chosen profession of becoming a prominent farmer and stockman which he continued to be until the time of his death. In 1942 they established residence at their present home to care for his wife's aging mother. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, two sisters and two brothers. He leaves to mourn his beloved and faithful wife and daughters Pauline Haney of Manson, Doris Gregg of Wells, MN, and son Chester Derry of Bagley; also seven grandchildren, one sister Rilla Hale of Des Moines, three brothers, Carl of Swaledale, Harrison of Bagley and Marcus of Ackworth, as well as a number of nieces and nephews. He was a kindly and thoughtful man and made many friends who knew him as an honest and upright citizen. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Methodist church in Panora with the Rev. W. R. Watkins of Macon, MO and the Rev. W. Fay Ford in charge. Music was furnished by the Song Fellows from Station W H O during the services with Bill Austin at the piano. Mrs. Ruth Robinson played soft music preceding and after the services. Active casket bearers were Jay Hemphill, Guy Richardson, Jess Badger, Everett Gilliland, Everett Cain and Thomas Moore. Obituary - Funeral services for Mrs. Marvin Meyers were conducted from the Bowman Lutheran Church at 2 P.M. Monday, Nov. 20 with Rev. E. W. Johnsboy and Rev. F. A. Meyers officiating. Interment was made in the Bowman cemetery. Pall bearers were Herman Bagley, Helmer Langlee, Fred Steig, Henry Taylor, Olaf Soreide, Ole Lewison. Obituary - Mrs. Marvin Myers, formerly Mrs. John Richard, of Bowman passed away Wednesday evening, Nov. 15th at the Belle Fourche Hospital following a long illness caused by cancer. Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 20th at 2 p.m. at the Lutheran Church in Bowman, Rev. F. A. J. Myers officating. Mrs. Myers was a frequent visitor in Marion and Deep Creek Townships in the early days and was well known there. Lavina Melissa Derry was buried Nov. 20, 1950, Bowman Cemetery, Bowman, ND.
*John Richard Obituary - (Bowman Co. Pioneer) -- Funeral services for John Richard, 73, were conducted from the Ohm Funeral Chapel in Bowman at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 16 with Darrel Lundby officiating. Pallbearers were Roy Vail, Oscar Overland, Lewis Kerr, Ralph Kerr, Mike Hirsch and Olaf Soreide. He passed away August 12 at a hospital in LaFarge, Wis. He was b. Nov. 16, 1883 in LaFarge, Wis., where he received his education. In 1907 he came to ND and filed on a homestead four miles north of Bowman. He was united in marriage to Lavina Derry in Guthrie Center, IA August 9, 1909. They farmed in Star township until 1940 when he moved to CA where he established his residence. In Jan. 1957 he became ill and unable to work so he began an extended trip to visit relatives and friends. He attended Bowman's Golden Jubilee June 12. On August 11, while visiting a sister in LaFarge he was taken ill and passed away the following day. He is survived by two daughters: Beulah Haivala and Frances Pendergrast, Bowman; five sons, Shirley, Dale and Kenneth, Bowman; Dean, Dillon, Mont., and Milo of Belle Fourche, S.D.; five sisters, two brothers, 22 grandchildren and a host of friends. A daughter, Melba, passed away in 1952. Relatives from away attending the services were Milo Richard, Belle Fourche, S.D. [Note: The Standard Atlas for Bowman Co. Beulah was b. in Bowman Co. near the Tughey Coal Mine on Oct. 16, 1912. Harriet Strandness was midwife in attendance. She was second of eight children. She attended Star School until 1929, when she started high school in Bowman. She graduated from Bowman High School in 1931. After graduation, she moved to Buffalo, SD, marrying Louis Edward Haivala, who was a carpenter. During the fifteen years she lived there, she worked in various stores, one of which Irene Stitch owned. In 1948, Beulah and Louis moved to Bowman. Beulah started working for Rex Foreman at the Super Value. In 1957, she worked for Frank Watson and Cy Fulton at Stubers Farm and Ranch Store. In 1966, she went to work clerking at the Red Owl Store for 13 years. In 1960, she lost her husband. In 1952, Beulah and Louis took her sister's daughter, Donna Scott, age 13, and raised her through high school and college. She worked for the Bank of ND at Bismarck. She was their family as they had no children of their own. Beulah entered the Sunset Home in June 1985. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis; her parents; two brothers, Dean and Milo; and one sister, Melba. Survivors include three brothers, Kenneth Richard, Bowman, N.D.; Dale Richard, Spearfish, S.D.; and Shirley Richard, Portland, OR; one sister Francis Pendergrast, Rosemead, CA. Pioneer, Sept. 5, 1997, Vol 94, #1, pg5: Kenneth Lee Richard, 86, San Antonio, Texas, formerly of Bowman, ND d. Sunday, August 24, 1997 at his home in San Antonio. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday morning, August 30th at 10:00 A.M. at the Bowman Lutheran Church, Bowman. The Reverend Galen Strand will officiate, with burial to follow the service in the Bowman Cemetery. Kenneth Richard was b. Sept. 11, 1910, in Star Township, Bowman, ND, son of John and Lavina Derry Richard and the oldest of eight children. He was reared five miles north of Bowman and received his education at the Star Consolidated School. At a young age he worked at various jobs in the area to include mining coal at the Halleck Coal Mine north of Bowman and other seasonal work in Wisconsin, MN, MO, OR, IA and Montana. He enlisted in the United States Army on Nov. 1, 1939 at Ft. Missoula, MT, in the 65th Coast Artillery. He served a total of three years, eleven months and fourteen days in overseas assignments which included guarding the Mayflower Lock at the Panama Canal and later as a member of Battery C 796th Antiaircraft Artillery of the 10th Armored Division commanded by General George Patton. He participated in battles and campaigns in the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe including the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries received at Ale, Germany. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Corporal on August 14, 1934 at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin after serving his country for five years, nine months and fourteen days. Following his discharge, he returned to Bowman, purchased farm land in Gem Township ten miles south of Bowman and farmed for many years. On April 4, 1948, he was united in marriage to Viola E. Anderson at the Lutheran Church in Baker, MT. To this union three children were b.: Lee, DeLaine and Terry. Due to failing health, he retired from active farming in the early 1960's. In 1989, they moved to Denver, CO, and to San Antonio, TX to make their home with their son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Ruth. Kenneth was a member of the Bowman Lutheran Church, a life member of the Bowman Historical Society, and a 37 year member of the Bowman American Legion. He enjoyed playing baseball, reading, hunting, fishing, and visiting with people. He took much pride in the remodeling that he and his brother, Dale, did to their home. He holds the record for catching the largest fish off the dock at Bowman-Haley Dam in Oct. 1976, a Northern Pike weighing 20 lbs., 4 oz., and 44 inches long. Despite ill health, he was a devoted and generous husband and father. He gladly helped his neighbors if they needed assistance and frequently provided transportation to those who needed it when he lived in Bowman. His greatest pride was his children.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Viola; one son, Terry; three brothers, Dean, Milo and Shirley (Shorts); and three sisters, Beulah, Melba and Frances. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Lee and Ruth Richard, San Antonio, TX; one daughter and son-in-law, DeLaine and Tom Evensvold, Montevideo, MN; one brother, Dale Richard, Spearfish, SD; three precious granddaughters, Diane, Dawn and Patricia Evensvold, Montevideo, MN; numerous neices, nephews and friends. Newspaper Article (Bowman Co. Pioneer) - Cpl. Kenneth L. Richard was a member of the 10th Armored Division and received the following commendation from Major General W. H. Morris, U.S. Army, Commanding:
"Tigers of the Tenth, your accomplishments have earned high praise from our corps and army commanders. During the first three weeks of fighting, you have liberated one hundred square miles of France and occupied fifty square miles of German territory. Many of your home town papers have already announced the Tigers as the first of General Patton's divisions to enter Germany. You have seized 64 towns, captured over two thousand prisoners of war, and repulsed eleven counter attacks. Enemy personnel and material you destroyed in substantial quantities. All of this has been at minimum cost to yourselves in lives lost and vehicles destroyed.
I take this opportunity to commend each officer and enlisted man of this great fighting division for an outstanding performance in our first test before the enemy". Cpl. Richard wears the Purple Heart and three battle stars. Submitted by Aileen Doyle.

Feb. 14, 1916 in Marion Township, Rhame, ND, daughter of Gilbert and Minnie Olson Anderson. She received her elementary education at Atkinson and Spring Creek Schools in Bowman Co. and graduated from Rhame High School in 1934. She was baptized and confirmed in the Rhame Lutheran Church. Following the loss of her mother at age 16 and completing high school, she stayed home for nine years and assisted her father manage the family farm and home. She attended Dickinson State Teachers College where she received her teacher's training and certificate in 1948. In 1968 she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Dickinson State College. This degree was achieved by attending summer sessions for many years and she was proud of that accomplishment. Viola served as teacher for several rural schools in both Bowman and Slope Counties and taught elementary schools in Scranton school system, the Crow Indian Reservation located at Lodge Grass, Montana, and Plevna, Montana school system. Following a teaching career spanning 28 years and 7 months, Viola retired from teaching in 1976. She was united in marriage to Kenneth L. Richard at the Baker Lutheran Church, Baker, MT, on April 4, 1948. Kenneth and Viola were blessed with three children: Lee, DeLaine and Terry. They moved to Denver, CO in 1989 and to San Antonio, Texas in 1991 to live with their son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Ruth. Viola was a member of the Bowman Lutheran Church, American Legion Auxillary, the state and local Retired Teachers Association and lifelong member of the Bowman Historical Society. Viola took much pride in her home and was proud of the remodeling she and Kenneth had done with their own hands. She as an accomplished hook rug artist and had made a rug for all her grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening, her flowers, pottery, quilting, arts and crafts. Her family was her greatest pride and joy and she so loved her grandchildren. She will be missed deeply by them and friends and neighbors in the many communities that she touched in such a special way. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Anderson; one son, Terry Richard; brothers, Alvin and Norman Anderson; sisters, Myrinne Hopewell and Lavina Skeel; one infant sister and two infant brothers. Marriage Notes for *Kenneth Richard and *Viola Anderson: Newspaper Clipping - Source Unidentified - Viola Anderson an April Bride - At 9 A.M., Sunday, April 4th, Miss Viola Edith Anderson, daughter of Gilbert Anderson of Bowman, N. Dak., became the bride of Kenneth Richard, Bowman, son of Mrs. Lavina Meyers of Bowman. The double ring ceremony took place in the Lutheran Church in Baker, Montana, Rev. J. A. Berge officiating. They were attended by the bride's sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Morrell McGee. The bride wore a street length, navy blue dress. The bridesmaid wore a blue suit. The groom and best man wore dark blue suits. The bride who is employed as teacher in the Stillwater School District is a graduate of Rhame high school and will complete a two year course at the State Teachers College in Dickinson this summer.
The groom is a farmer and the young couple will make their home on his farm. A wedding dinner was served at the home of the bride's father at noon. A three-tiered wedding cake topped by a miniature bride and groom centered the table. The wedding cake was baked by the bride's sister, Mrs. McGee. A reception was held at the Morrell McGee home Sunday evening with twenty nine guests present. Room and table decorations were pink and white. Tulips formed the floral decorations. Relatives from a distance were Norman Anderson of Billings, Montana, Mr. and Mrs. Reid Hopewell and Diane of Winona, MN, and Mr. and Mrs. Nobel Hanson of Blair, Wisconsin.

He attended and graduated from Dawson College in Glendive, MT, with his degree in surveying technology. He was employed by Brosz Engineering as a land surveyor until diabetes complications resulted in his seeking other work opportunities. Up until his death, he was actively involved with various bands throughout the Tri-state area. To those who knew Terry, he always extended a willing and helping hand. His smile, outgoing personality and sense of humor will be sadly missed. He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents. The following year she went to Des Moines, IA, and was employed at the United and White Star laundries. She made her home there until 1941 when she returned to Bowman. During the next few years she was employed as a waitress in cafes in Buffalo and Belle Fourche. She was m. to James T. Scott July 27, 1943. They made their home in Belle Fourche since their marriage. During the past eight years Mrs. Scott had been in poor health. Survivors are her husband, James T. Scott; daughter, Donna, Belle Fourche; five brothers - Kenneth, Dale and Shirley of Bowman, Milo in the armed services, and Dean Richards of Dillon, Mont.; two sisters - Mrs. Joe Pendegrast and Mrs. Louis Haivala of Bowman, and her father, John Richard of Lincoln Acres, Cal; five nephews and six nieces.

His family moved the next spring to Scranton, ND where his father was a blacksmith. After a few years they moved into the Mineral Springs area where they started farming. He attended school there and was baptised and confirmed into the Lutheran faith in 1925. June 2, 1934, Joe and Frances Richard were m. in Buffalo, SD. They continued to live and farm in the Mineral Springs area until 1940, when they bought their own farm north of Bowman. To this union four daughters and one son was b. - Audren J. Hefner, Temple City, Ca; Fern J. McKinney, Orange, Ca; Betty Jo Metz, Rosemead, Ca; and Nina G. Pendergrast, Pomona, Ca. His father, one sister, two half-brothers, one granddaughter and an infant son preceded him in death. Left to mourn his passing besides his wife and daughters are his mother, Minnie Pendergrast, Elmonte, Ca, one sister, Francis Kurtiz, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, two brothers Jack Pendergrast, Tacoma, Washington, Mike Pendergrast, Fargo, ND, five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. April 21, 1923, in Star Township, Bowman, ND, son of John and Lavina Derry Richards. He was reared five miles north of Bowman on the family farm and received his education at rural Star School. He attended one year of high school at Bowman. He worked on the family farm and was a sheep shearer for many years. He entered the United States Army Nov. 22, 1943, and served in the 82nd Airborne Division. He served in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre during World War II. He was in the Battle of the Bulge where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart Medal of Honor. He returned to ND on March 31, 1946, with the rank of staff sergeant. He worked for Consolidated Telephone as a lineman and purchased farm land with his brother, Dale, ten miles south of Bowman. He m. Florence (Tootie) Fleck June 15, 1948, at St. Charles Catholic Church in Bowman. He continued working for Consolidated Telephone and farmed south of Bowman. In 1960 he and Tootie moved to Portland, OR, and worked as a longshoreman and for Press Specialties for five years. He later purchased a share at Linnton Plywood, where he worked until 1982 when he retired. Every year they returned to ND in the spring to seed the land, and in the fall to harvest the land. They stayed at the Kenneth Stinchfield farm in the spring and fall until Kenneth and Liz moved to Bowman. They then stayed in the basement apartment of Russell and Delberta Kulseth's. His wife, Tootie, became ill with cancer and d. Feb. 19, 1987. Shorts cared for her at home for several years with his loving and caring sense of responsibility. He moved back to ND in the spring of 1988. He m. Tillie Egeland August 24, 1988, at St. Charles Catholic Church in Bowman. They made their home in Bowman where he semi-retired from farming. They enjoyed many tours in the United States and trips to Portland to visit his children. Tillie became ill several years ago and needed bypass surgery and later, knee surgery. Again, Shorts was there to care for her with his loving and caring hands. He was what you would call a gentle, caring, loving, and most considerate man. He was always there to lend a helping hand or to give a word of comfort and care to anyone. He was a steward of the land, preserving it for future generations. He attended many meetings to improve the soil and did much research and studying to preserve it. He so enjoyed his family and many friends. He loved to play cards, was a good horseshoe player, and played the fiddle in a band at barn dances in earlier years. He was a self-taught, intelligent individual who did much reading and never stopped learning; always looking forward to the future. He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather, and will be missed deeply by his family and the many friends who loved him so much. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Tootie, two brothers, Milo and Dean; and three sisters, Melba, Beulah and Frances. 3. Tribute by Wayne, June and Crew of Wayne's Conoco-- "A friend loveth at all times and a brother was b. for adversity". That's the kind of friend and co-worker we lost Saturday when Milo Richard d. unexpectedly from a heart attack. After you have been associated with someone like Milo for all these years, and look back, there have been good times together and bad, happy times and sad. Respect grew, not diminished--fellowship was closer, not farther removed, because of constant work, side by side. Milo knew we loved him, but couldn't know how much. He was the kind of person who loved to work. And loyalty, honesty and faithfulness were just a part of his work habits. If he was to be work by 6:00 A.M., you knew he'd be there, but his quitting time seemed unimportant when the customer needed something. We could have put our most precious possession in his care, and he would have protected it and cared for it. In all the years he worked with us, there were times when we handed him his paycheck we felt badly because it was not enough--but never, never did we ever fell that he was overpaid because of the service he had rendered. He had a great sense of humor, and loved to laugh. Yet we never knew him to laugh at, or ridicule, anyone. He loved his family first and foremost, he enjoyed his home, he loved nature--hunting and fishing and he loved people. We will miss Milo here at Wayne's Service, just as Verla and the kids miss him at home. His kind is almost irreplaceable. If some of you come into our place of business and find us short-tempered or short-handed, please be patient. We are looking for someone to take Milo's place -- and that may take a long, long time! She is survived by her daughter, Barbara L. and husband, James Wade Lilly, of Newburgh; one son, Richard E. Gerrish of Winter Harbor and his special friend, Patricia Zebulske of Stetson; two granddaughters, Cathy J. Carruthers her daughter, Laura, of Woodbridge, and Susan L. Campbell and her husband, Wayne, of Hampton, Va.; two grandsons, Brian P. Gerrish and his wife, Vicki, and their sons, Ryan and Gabe, of Birch Harbor and Wesley D. Gerrish and his fiancee, Sarah Begley, of Attleboro, Mass.; one sister, Ruth OKeefe and her husband, John, of East Hartford, Conn.; a sister-in-law, Rossetta Myrick of Labelle, Fla.; several nieces and nephews. He married Sarah Phillips in Pennsylvania. They had 14 children in 21 years. He died on May 6, 1895, in Pennsylvania, at the age of 59." The 1880 federal census lists his family in Jordan, Northumberland Co., PA.

He had children: Daniel, Thomas and Hannah, who married John ROSS, of Elizabeth. Thomas was born Mar. 1722, married Hannah NORRIS, 1745, had children: Daniel, born 1746, married Loisa, daughter of Capt. Job ALLEN (1), of Rockaway, Dec. 21, 1766, by the Rev. Timothy JOHNES, of Morristown. He was at Basking Ridge at this time, and is said to have also lived on the present David LASH farm, near Rockaway, and from thence removed to Sussex County and enlisted as a private in the second Sussex Regiment, under Col. Benjamin TUSTIN, Major Samuel MEEKER and Capt. Joseph HARKER. Eighty in all were ambushed by the Indians under Joseph BRANDT, at Lackawaxen, PA. Forty-four were killed, of these twelve were Sussex men, among them was Daniel TALMAGE, July 22, 1779. Forty-three years after the massacre they were buried at Goshen, NY, and a monument erected with their names inscribed. Col. John HATHORN, then eighty years of age, laid the foundation stone, July 22, 1822. John and Enos died in youth. Thomas, born Mar. 1722, married second wife Elizabeth WICKS, had eight children. Six daughters, names unknown. Thomas and Noah. Married third wife."
