[603] As only heir of Lionel, Duke of Clarence, and Elizabeth, heir of William de Burgh, Philippa brought to Edmund in their marriage key honors and estates. Thus Edmund "not only became the representative of one of the chief Anglo-Norman lordships in Ireland in right of his wife Philippa, but the latter, on the death of her father shortly after her marriage, stood next in succession to the crown after the Black prince and his sickly son, afterwards King Richard II.
