[23831] The LDS Church's unverified IGI File (CD #57 Pin #384246) states John was "killed in an Indian ambush" and was a Freeman at Ipswich 28 March 1654, and in 1675 was "Sargent in King Philip's War, serving under Capt. Edward Hutchinson when he led his men into an Indian ambush in Brookfield." "Soldiers in King Philip's War, 1675-1677," 3rd Ed., George Madison Bodge (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1976), p. 109: The militia pursuing the Native Americans "...after a circuitous and difficult march of ten miles the company came into Brookfield town, spreading the alarm among the inhabitants. There they at once seized and hastily fortified one of the largest and strongest houses, said to have been the Inn of Sergt. John Ayres, just slain in the fight." Op. cit., p. 110: "A small garrison was undoubtedly maintained at the fortified house some time after the withdrawal of the inhabitants, probably up to the 12th of October, and it is likely that widow Susannah Ayres remained during that time, as is indicated by her petition and account presented the Court in October, 1677, which charges supplies to soldiers...."
