[48948] "Bangor Daily News [Bangor, ME], 17 August 2021": "Augusta - Grace Myra Grant Kenney, age 107, of Augusta, passed away on August 15, 2021, following a well-lived, well-loved life, full of grace! Born on Webster Plantation, in Penobscot County, Maine, on December 6, 1913, Grace is the daughter of Fred Lorenzo Grant and Birdie Ella (Smith) Grant Davis. Born in the age of horse draw carriages, and long before the modern conveniences we recognize today, Grace bear witness to the evolution of time. She experienced all world wars, the depression, the telegram to the internet, and 18 sitting United States Presidents. Her full life, all 107 years and 8 months, is nothing short of incredible and something to be fully celebrated. Grace's legacy is a gift she has handed down to each of us that knew and loved her. Grace met her future husband, Fred L. "Ken" Kenney, while attending summer school at the Farmington Normal School, now known as The University of Maine at Farmington. Ken was playing saxophone in a band, when a tall, gorgeous, brunette entered the dance hall, and it was love at first sight. Grace married Ken, after a true courtship, as it was known at that time, in Milo, Maine, on January 30, 1937. A brilliant woman, and indeed well ahead of her time, Grace decided to keep her maiden name as part of her legal name and also decided to forego having children immediately upon marriage. Instead, Grace began teaching school, in a one room schoolhouse, spanning grades First through Eight, with a single wood stove to keep them all warm. Grace loved teaching and worked in schools around the State of Maine, including Lagrange, Nash, Lincoln, Gilbert, Hussey, as well as substitute teaching at St. Mary's School. She also taught school in Windsor, Montpelier and Brattleboro, Vermont. To this day, her penmanship is one for the ages, with a perfect slant and configuration. In fact, many have taken to laminating her hand-written letters or recipes to preserve this unique and historical marker. Grace Myra was a loving wife and mother. She was married to her husband Ken, for over 52 years. Their relationship exemplified a true partnership, for which the entire family continues to marvel. Grace with her style and zest for life and Ken with his calm and candid zeal. Grace had two children that she simply adored and fiercely protected - Linda Jeanne (Kenney) Lacey and Meylon Grant Kenney. No two children were more loved than these two and that love endured until Grace's final and peaceful breath. In fact, Grace was the soul of the entire family and often the bridge between the old world and the present. When you visited her home, life stood still, and you found yourself transported back to a time where family truly visited, reminisced, and learned. Strong willed and resolute in her convictions, Grace had a way of listening that put one at ease; yet, presented with a forthright manner that loving nudging you in the right direction. Grace's love was always unconditional, no matter the circumstance, and any and all were welcomed into her home with full acceptance and warm reception.Grammy Grace was, by all accounts, the very best of grandmothers. Truly exceptional! Our surrogate mother, our best friend, our confidant, and biggest fan, Grammy brought a sense of security to our lives that enriched us beyond measure. Ever consistent and truly invested, she made all the difference in our young lives and beyond. In fact, Grammy never forgot a birthday, a favorite birthday dessert (which she hand-made and delivered), or a holiday with the infamous $5 bill enclosed. She also made the very best tuna fish and fried bologna sandwiches. In all things, this resounding love pulsed through the entire family and enveloped a myriad of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends. Grace not only touched lives, she changed them for the better, and for that we are all forever grateful. An avid sports enthusiast, Grace was a fervent Patriots and Red Sox fan. On any given Sunday, you would find Grace in her #12 jersey. In the spring, she faithfully watched her Red Sox with relevant stats in hand. Indeed, Grace was known for her love of games. And, she was spectacular at all of them. One of the longest living bridge players, Grace played for too many years to count and, even as her friends began to decline in health, a younger generation of friends continued to play the game with her, which she almost always won. Ever the word sleuth, rarely did anyone beat her at Scrabble - so it is fitting herein to note that 'Grace' is defined as follows: [gras] NOUN (1) Simple elegant or refinement of movement; (2) Courteous goodwill; (3) Favor of God. We could not agree more! A daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, aunt, and cousin, Grace is lovingly survived by her son, Meylon G. Kenney of Augusta, ME; daughter, Linda J. (Kenney) Lacey of Augusta, ME; eight grandchildren: Gayle (Lacey) Pelletier and her husband, Michael Pelletier, of Augusta, ME; Wayne Lacey of South China, ME; Sharon Lacey of Portland, ME; Douglas Lacy and his wife, Mary Lacey, of Scarborough, ME; Deborah M. Jarzombek of Augusta, ME; Shannon G. Kenney and his wife, Sherry Kenney, of Augusta, ME; Joelle G. Nelson and her husband, Christopher Nelson, of Sugar Land, TX; and Jayson J. Kenney and his wife, Stephanie Kenney, of Augusta, ME; eleven great-grandchildren: Abigail Pelletier, Ryan Pelletier, Benjamin Lacey, Madeline Lacey, Nicole Musisi, Scott Gemas, Zachary Louten, Jocelyn Nelson, Alisha Bartlett, Jakob Davis, and Aries Aguayo; and eight great-great-grandchildren: Natasha Berry, Nathaniel Barbeau, Nevin Musisi, Nylah Musisi, Nessiah Musisi, Keegan Gemas, Logan Gemas, and Marcus Bartlett; and many extra-special nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.Grace was predeceased by her parents; husband, Ken; brother, Fred L. Grant and his wife, Enola Grant; sister, Sula (Grant) Thompson and her husband, David Thompson; sister, Laura (Grant) Pelkey and her husband, Donald Pelkey; brother, Blake Grant and his wife, Ariel Grant; son-in-law, Ronald F. Lacey; daughter-in-law, Lois Marie Kenney; grandson, Steven Glenn Lacey; granddaughter, Laura Lee Ann Bartlett; nephew, Ted Grant; nephew, Peter Thompson; and niece, Betha (Grant) Andrews. Pursuant to Grace's specific request, visitation will commence on Monday, August 23, at 10 a.m. and a public funeral service will immediately follow at 11 a.m. at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. Thereafter, Grace will be interred, next to her loving husband, Ken, at Hill Crest Cemetery, located in Lagrange, Maine, at 3 p.m."
