"During the reign of Henry VI he was three times appointed one of the governors of Lincoln's Inn. In 1441 he was made a King's sergeant at law, and in the following year Lord Chief Justice of the King's bench. As a judge Fortescue was recommended for his wisdom, gravity and uprightness; and he is said to have been favoured by the King. He held his office during the remainder of the reign of Henry VI, to whom he was loyal; as a result, he was attainted of treason in the first parliament of Edward IV. When Henry subsequently fled into Scotland, he is supposed to have appointed Fortescue, who appears to have accompanied him in his flight, Lord Chancellor of England. In 1463 Fortescue accompanied Queen Margaret and her court in their exile on the Continent, and returned with them afterwards to England. During their wanderings abroad the chancellor wrote for the instruction of the young Prince Edward his celebrated work 'De laudibus legum Angliae'. On the defeat of the Lancastrian party he made his submission to Edward IV, from whom he received a general pardon dated Westminser, 13 Oct 1471. The exact date of his death is not known. Fortescue's masterly vindication of the laws of England, though received with great favour by experts, did not appear in print until the reign of King Henry VIII, when it was published, but without a date." He was born at South Addison, Sept. 20, 1903. the son of Augustus L. and Julia Emma (Cates) Gray. He was employed in the local fishing industry, had his own Christmas wreath business and trucked fish scales for Maine Pearlessence Corp of Eastport until two years ago. He was a member of the Jonesport RLDS Church since 1947. Survivors include his wife, Gladys (Church) Gray of Jonesport; a son, Lorin and his wife, Valerie of Jonesport; four grandchildren, Heather, Dawn, Michael and Emily; a stepdaughter, Alice Vane of Machias; a brother, Chester Gray of Jonesport; a sister, Hazel Crowley of Sanford. He was predeceased by two brothers, Maynard and Maurice, and a sister, Laura."

[55835] Stuart's obituary: "Bangor- Stuart Gillis Howard, March 28, 1937- October 12, 2022, passed away at MVH after a long illness. Born the 4th of 9 children to Phyllis Robertson Howard Coombs & Walter Howard. He was predeceased by his mother Phyllis, father Walter, and stepfather Urban Coombs, siblings Bruce Howard, Darrel Howard, Theron Howard, Steven Howard, Doris Dion, and Michele Burgess. He is survived by 6 children: Kim Herz and Greg of Winterport, Sally Thoits-Didio of Searsport, Tracy Charpentier and Michelle of Wells, Aaron Howard of Orland, Will Howard of Surry, and Aimee Howard of Portland. 8 grandchildren: Ryan, Leah, Daniel, Luke, Matthew, Meg, Brian, and Andi. Siblings Charlene Howard Rocheleau, Amanda Howard, and Kevin Howard along with many nieces and nephews. Over his lifetime he served his Country in Korea. Then worked as a pipefitter, lumberjack, courier driver and was widely known as a skilled carpenter and talented boat builder. Stuart was also a skilled hunter, fisherman and an avid gardener. He was a lifelong member of Masonic Rising Star Lodge #4 and member of Anah Shrine. He was almost born in a sawmill. A great many thanks to the staff at Maine Veterans Home in Bangor. Special thanks to Jeane Linehan for many years of supportive help. Maine Veterans Home is truly a wonderful facility."
