Find A Grave memorial 79761175 offers: "Jonathan's lineage was German; he was the son of Henry Schell/Shell and Margaret Elizabeth Lesher. His family relocated from Berks County, Pennsylvania to Miamisburg, Montgomery County, Ohio in 1820 when he was 9 years old. About 1825 in Miamisburg, Ohio Jonathan was learning and working at the cabinetmaker's trade. He later dropped this occupation to take up farming. In his early youth, Mr. Schell helped to break the first furrow for the Miami canal.
When he took up residence on his new farm near Miamisburg, Ohio; where he lived until 1851, he made many substantial improvements, including all buildings. Local history says he brought his farm to a most excellent condition of productiveness. The farmer Jonathan S. Shell Sr. on 2 Nov 1832 in Montgomery County, Ohio married Elizabeth Gebhart. The census reports of 1850 and 1860 show them living in Jefferson Township, in Montgomery County, Ohio. Records show their union was blessed with ten children. They were active in the Ellerton Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church for a period of over seventy years. Jonathan's seven sons and son-in-law also worshiped in the same faith (Lutheran) and in politics they are all democrats."
