Our John Pickering is subject of a sketch in "The Pioneers of Maine and New Hampshire, 1623-1660," Charles Henry Pope (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1973), p. 163: "John, Piscataqua . . . Was ordered by Pisc. court in 1642 to 'deliver the Old Combinatio at Strawberry Bank' to the next court. ...He took oath of fidelity 11 July 1659. He deposed 17 June 1660, ae. about 60 years. ...He died 18 Jan. 1668. [Dov. Hist. Coll.] He made will dated 11 Nov 1668, bequeathing to son Thomas and daughters Rebecca, Abigail, Mary and Sarah; it was brought into court 29 June 1669, but not allowed; admin. was granted to his son John, and children Rebecca, Abigail and Thomas placed under the guardianship of Mr. Joshua Moody."

Another John Pickering arrived 1643/35 at Ipswich, Mass. with known sons John and Jonathan. He was b. 1610 at Newgate, Coventry, Warwickshire, and died in 1657 at Salem, Mass.; he m. 1636 Elizabeth (Lawrence?). See "The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England, 1620-1633" which reports John "signed the grant of the glebe at Portsmouth, 25 May 1640. On 2 February 1663/4 'Jno. Pickering appeared on his presentment for not coming to meeting; he alleged no discontent again Mr. Moodey nor dislike of the ordinance, only his great deafness, whereupon the Court desire him to come when he can in warm weather.' Freeman: Oath of fidelity (at Portsmouth court), 11 July 1659. ... (Since we reject the connection with the John Pickering of Cambridge, whose wife was named Mary, we do not know the given name of the wife of John Pickering of Piscatagua.)"
