Also seen as Johann Nicholar Ickes, Nicholas (III) was the founder of Ickesburg, Perry Co., PA in 1816. See notes for his daughter, Margaret. He entered service in the Continental Army on 1 Oct 1780 when the 4th Battalion of the Philadelphia Militia was mustered in. He was then age 16. Family history reports that he served until the end of the war (3 Sep 1783), but application for a service connected grant shows army private tenure as six months. He may have had a special assignment, perhaps as a spy, as his name does not appear in later official military records.

An alternate date for his birth is given on a chart supplied by Diane Harding as 1 Oct 1764. Nicholas was confirmed in the New Hanover ("Swamp") Church, the oldest Lutheran church in America, where colonial Ickes records are found.

He first married Mary Magdalene Christman [or Christmas] of Montgomery Co., PA and their first child, born 5 Oct 1787, was baptised 12 Dec 1789. He moved to present-day Perry Co., PA about 1797. They had five children, the fourth perhaps died young. Mary Magdalene died in 1797. She and Nicholas sold 228 acres to John Hendricks of Limerick Twp.

Nicholas must have married widowed Susan (Loy) Bernheisel about July 1797, shortly after his first wife died. Children (and their spouses) are from D.A.R. application for National # 312380, Verna Elnora Harding.

Ickesburg was originally in Cumberland County, and was on the hunting grounds of the Tuscarawa Indians (southernmost of the Iroquois tribes). Nicholas and some of his kin were early settlers there following the end of the War for Independence. They had good relationships with the Native Americans, who brought lead to them to trade pound for pound for butter. The Ickes families found the species of oak tree in the area ideal for use in tanning, and eventually received gold medals at the Paris Exhibitions as producing the finest leather in the world. They operated a trading post to acquire hides and furs in southeastern Wyoming. They were also coopers, produced dairy products and ran a icensed distillery.

"History of Perry County...," H. H. Hain (Harrisburg, PA: 1922), p.1051 states: "Nicholas Ickes left Montgomery County in 1795 and settled in Perry County of 230 acres of land bought of Robert Robinson. He also purchased 260 acres of mountain land ofrom Dr. Mailey, 130 from Charles Elliot. He also purchased 170 acres from George Sanderson in 1816. on which he lived and where he died in 1848, aged eight-four years. Ickesburg is located on part of this tract, hence the name . . . It was laid out in 1816."

Of the children by the first wife, Elizabeth, the eldest, married Peter Hench, who lived on the Ickes farm, and is the mother of George Hench, now of Carlisle, and Nicholas Hench, of Ickesburg;she later married ______ Furnell; Samuel settled at Sandy Hill, on the farm now owned by his son Michael;Jonas studied medicine, and practiced in this county many years and is now living in Illinois (NOTE - this is the Dr. Jonas Ickes in the first posting - 1792 and 1793 are both given as his birth years!); Catharine, the youngest, married Paul Schaeffer and emigrated to Ohio.
