[38979] Find A Grave Memorial 101220873 offers: "She was born and died in Kürnbach, Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, according to records at the Kürnbach Evangelical Lutheran Church. She undoubtedly was buried in or near Kürnbach. Her grave site has not been found. At one time there was a cemetery attached to the church. However the cemetery was removed and the area terraced long ago. Today the cemetery is on the edge of the village. Burial customs in Germany are considerably different than in the United States. Grave sites in Germany are rented, typically for 20 years and are then reused. Therefore, it is unlikely that her grave site will ever be located. Because of German naming customs in use at the time, she would have been known as Maria Arnold or Maria Gern after her marriage." Ancestry.com offers: "Arnold Name Meaning - English and German: from a very widely used personal name of Germanic origin, composed of the elements arn 'eagle' + wald 'rule'. In addition, it has probably absorbed various European cognates and their derivatives (for the forms, see Hanks and Hodges 1988). English: habitational name from either of the two places called Arnold (see Arnall)."

[2665] Boudicca led the rebellion against Rome in AD 60. Roman historian Cassius Dio (ca.150-235) reports she had a heavy mane of bright red hair, a rough voice and huge frame, and put men to shame as the `Warrior Queen.' "Prasutagus, king of the Iceni, after a life of long and renowned prosperity, had made the emperor [of Rome] co-heir with his own two daughters. Prasutagus hoped by this submissiveness to preserve his kingdom and household from attack. But it turned out otherwise. Kingdom and household were plundered like prizes of war, the one by Roman officers, the other by Roman slaves. As a beginning, his widow Boudicca was flogged and her daughters raped. The Iceni chiefs were deprived of their hereditary estates as if the Romans had been given the whole country. The king's own relatives were treated as slaves." Having led the rebellion, Boudicca poisoned herself. {-Tacitus, "The Annals of Imperial Rome" (ed. by Michael Grant, 1963)} See Boudicca's Revolt," D. R. Dudley and Graham Webster (Cambridge U. Press), "Boudicca's Rebellion," John Pitt (British History Illustrated, Vol. 3, No. 3 [1976], p.46-55).
