[4438] Eustace II was also Count of Benonia and Ardoxin, "friend and companion of William the Conqueror." {-Collins, "Royal Ancestors...," p. 46} He served at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. But see Encyclpaedia Britannica (1956 Edition), 8:893: "Eustace II (d. 1093), count of Boulogne, was the husband of Goda, daughter of the English king Aethelred the Unready, and aunt of Edward the Confessor. Eustace paid a visit to England in 1051, and was honourably received at the Confessor's court. A brawl in which he and his servants became involved with the citizens of Dover led to a serious quarrel between the king and Earl Godwin. The latter, to whose jurisdiction the men of Dover were subject, refused to punish them. His contumacy was made the excuse for the outlawry of himself and his family. In 1066 Eustace came to England with Duke William, and fought at the battle of Hastings. In the following year, probably because he was dissatisfied with his share of the spoil, he assisted the Kentishmen in an attempt to seize Dover Castle. The conspiracy failed, and Eustace was sentenced to forfeit his English fiefs. Subsequently he was reconciled to the Conqueror, who restored a part of the confiscated lands." Kent, resided in St. Paul Parish; will mentions his deceased wife Isabell and bequeaths bulk of his estate to his son Lyonell (per Mayflower Quarterly, 8/1977, p. 81). "Dictionary of English Surnames" (1958) states that first Chilton recorded is William de Chilton, 1195. The surname Chilton may mean "child's town", a place where young nobles prepared for knighthood. Ancestral File 1159-8S6 gives his birth year as about 1479 (not verified).

[5143] Bertram's first wife is Maud, dau. of Robert de Ferrers, Earl of Derby, but they had no child; his second wife and mother of his children is Roesia______. Bertram was Sheriff of Leicester under Henry II, was with Richard I on Crusade (and at the siege of Acon, which city was placed in his custody), and founded the abbey of Croxden, Staffordshire, in 1176, and was "a liberal benefactor to the church." {-Burke's Dormant & Extinct Peerages, 1883} Bertram and Roesia had, beside Nicholas: William (died childless, 1199), Thomas (his successor; died childless in Ireland, 1199), Bertram, Robert, Walter (constable of Bruges Castle in Valois and father of Ralf de Verdon) and Leceline (m. Hugh de Lacey). "Medieval English Ancestors of Certain Americans," Carl Boyer III (Santa Clarita, CA, 2001), p. 249: "Bertram de Verdun, brother and heir of Nicholas, and son of Norman de Verdun, who was son of Bertram, the Domesday tenant of Farnham Royal or of Lascelyn de Clynton was said to have died 21 Oct. 1271, when, according to the 'Annauls of Clonmacnoise, he and thirteen knights were poisoned together in England. He married first, before 14 May 1244, Margaret de Lacy. He married second, before 1267, Eleanor, who was living 10 June 1278."
