He held the office of Master of the Wardrobe to King James VI in 1584. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] in 1585. In 1587 he was banished from the Scottish court, after having possibly schemed for the execution of Mary Queen of Scots while Ambassador to England. In 1589 he returned to the Scottish court and the King's favour. Gray was raised as a Protestant and educated at the University of Glasgow. In 1575, while still young, he married Elizabeth Lyon, daughter of John, the 8th Lord Glamis (c.1544-77), but the marriage quickly failed. Gray removed himself to France, became a Roman Catholic and joined the supporters of Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-87), who by this time lay in an English prison. He returned to Scotland in 1583, and immediately endeared himself to the young James VI (1566 - 1625) through the knowledge Gray had obtained of his mother, while conspiring with James Stewart, Earl of Arran (d. 1595) to ensure Mary remained in captivity. Gray was appointed Ambassador to England in 1584 and took the opportunity to plot the downfall of Arran while advancing his own position. He brokered negotiations between Elizabeth I and James over the fate of Mary, having decided that she should be executed or quietly assassinated. However, Mary's execution brought Gray's own down-fall; when he returned to Scotland it became clear that public opinion thought her execution harsh and Gray was held responsible. He was declared a traitor, jailed and banished from Scotland for a short time. James remained fond of Gray and allowed him to return in 1589, restoring his offices. Gray quickly returned to his discreditable career. With Francis Stewart, 5th Earl of Bothwell (c.1562 - c.1614), he attempted to take his king hostage at Falkland in 1592 and was party to a variety of other distasteful events. Surprisingly James continued to support him. In 1585, Gray married again. His bride was a cousin of his king, Lady Margaret Stuart, daughter of Robert Stewart, Earl of Orkney (1533 - 1593), who was the illegitimate son of King James V (1512-42). The Master of Gray succeeded his father as the 6th Lord Gray in 1609, only three years before his death."
[307] Enoch was killed "in his own door" by Indians. He resided on the Eastern Branch of Spruce Creek, Kittery, in a garrison house. In 1693 he made his will "being aged and weak in body." The Indian attack which killed him resulted in the capture of his wife and her being taken to Quebec. Enoch was a kinsman of Hugh Hutchins - see "Hugh Hutchins of Old England," Jack R. Hutchins & Richard J. Hutchings (Baltimore: Gateway Press, 1984) and Jack R. Hutchins, "Robert Hutchins of Colonial America" (1992). Jack R. Hutchins also authored "Robert Hutchins of Colonial America" (Baltimore: Gateway Press, 1992) in which he states (pp. 6-7): "Enoch Hutchins was the progenitor of the large Hutchings - Hutchins family of York, Maine. The first record of Enoch Hutchins is when he was transported to Maryland prior to June 1652 by William Ayres, a gentleman from Nansemond County, Virginia. Mr. Ayres came to Maryland in May 1651 and it was probably at that time that Enoch arrived. On 15 February 1655 Enoch Hutchinson was one of 45 people transported to Virginia, probably from the eastern shore of Maryland, by William Wright, gentleman, of Nancemond [sic] County. Enoch probably completed his seven years service and then left Virginia to go to an area populated by his countrymen. The first record of him in New England was in 1659 when it was noted in Savage's records of New England, from an unknown source, that the goods of Enoch were taken to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, by a John Hutchins. It would seem logical that the John Hutchins who took Enoch's goods to Portsmouth was the same John Hutchins of Haverhill who on 2 December 1659 signed a contract to construct the Portsmouth meeting house. Enoch Hutchings married Mary B. Stevenson of Dover in Dover, New Hampshire, on 5 April 1667. She was born in 1651 the daughter of Thomas and Margaret Stevenson of Oyster River, Durham, New Hampshire. In April 1696 an unknown Nathaniel Hutchins was listed in the militia of Oyster River. Enoch and John Hutchins settled at Spruce Creek, Kittery, Maine, in 1667. He built a garrison house and lived there the rest of his life. Enoch made his will on 7 June 1693 and Historian Niles called him an old man in his report of the Indian attack on Kittery when Enoch was killed and three of his sons taken captive to Canada on 9 May 1698. The son Benjamin returned from Canada before 29 May 1701. Samuel returned in January 1699 and Jonathan returned in 1705. The large Hutchings - Hutchins family of Kittery and York are descendants of Enoch." A map showing his property is on p. 64 of "Old Kittery and Her Families," Everett S. Stackpole (Lewiston, ME: 1903). The surname is a diminuitive of Hugo, and is from the French. It is found largely in the southwest of England. Steward, who retired 10 years ago as a Hercules Powder Co. employe, died at 1:35 p. m. yesterday at his home, 946 Washington street, Freeland. He had been ill three months. Mr. Steward's wife, the former Anna C. Pfansteil, was killed by a car in 1942 as she stepped from their home along the Conyngham road. Born in Freeland, Mr. Steward was a son of the late Jonas and Martha Jane (Schell) Steward. The deceased resided most of his life in Freeland, living for 10 years along the Conyngham Road and the past eight years in Freeland. He was a member of St. John's Reformed Church, Freeland, and B. P. O. E., Freeland Lodge 1145. Surviving children include Mrs. Andrew Kegel, Paulsboro, N. J.; Mrs. Paul Schmeerfeld, Hometown; Mrs. Charles Lutz, Somerton, Philadelphia; David L. Steward, of Roosevelt, Long Island; Donald and Robert Steward, Freeland, and Thomas, Frackville. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Feist, Freeland; Mrs. Geraldine Waldron, Drums, and a brother, Percy Steward, Allentown. There are 13 grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 10 a. m. Monday from the Grebey funeral Home with services in charge of Rev. W. M. Kohler. Burial will be made in St. John's cemetery, St. Johns." David is son of Jonas Levine Steward (1860-1896) and Martha Jane Schell (1865-1905).
