He was born Aug. 13, 1925, in Winter Harbor, a son of Foster P. and Eva A. (Wescott) Harrington. Walter grew up in Winter Harbor and graduated from Winter Harbor High School in 1943. On Feb. 14, 1947, Walter married Gertrude E. Haycock in Ellsworth. She passed away November 2003. After working several jobs as a young man, he and his son, Gordon, formed Winter Harbor Carpenters and Builders in 1975. They worked together building homes for the next 25 years in the Winter Harbor and Gouldsboro area. He enjoyed playing golf, hunting, fishing and loved spending time with family and friends. He was a member and past master of Schoodic Grange, Winter Harbor Fire Department, selectman and the sexton of the Winter Harbor cemeteries. He is survived by his son and best friend, Gordon Harrington, and wife, Diana; granddaughters, Melissa Harrington, Tracey Hutchins and husband, Jeffery, all of Winter Harbor; great-grandchildren, Robert and Matthew Correia, and Alexis and Emilee Hutchins; sister, Grace Gerrish; several nieces and nephews; special great-nephew, Brendan and Kristen Rush; and special friend, Lawrence Cole. He was predeceased by his parents; wife of 56 years, Gertrude; four brothers; and three sisters."

She worked many year at the Baxter freezing plant in Corinna snd attended the Corinna Christian Church. She and her husband were married Nov. 2, 1918 in Augusta. She is survived by four sons, Melvin and Robert, both of Winthrop; Leland of St. Albans' and LaForest of Corinna; four daughters, Mrs. Annie Brann of Windsor, Mrs. Muriel Abbott, Phoenix, Ariz., Mrs. Amelia Wright, West Virginia, and Mrs. Grace Shea of Ellsworth; three sisters, Grace Haglsy of Cornwall Bridge, Conn.; Cates of Kents Hill; and Zelpha Richardson of Boothboy Harbor; 18 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousin.s Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the Corinna Christian Church with the Rev. Edward Jaworski officiating. Burial will be in the Village Cemetery, Corinna."

In 1720 he was a field officer in Kittery his house being made into a garrison. He was from Salisbury in 1724 when he sold his house in Kittery. He had moved to Arundel before 30 June 1729. Samuel was made a proprietor of Arundel in 1731. Samuel was also a slave owner." Samuel's house was one of 36 which were ordered to be reinforced as garrison houses in 1722 - his family and those of Jonathan Hutchins and John Chapman were to take refuge there - NEHGR 54:410.

[11510] She was a major force in French politics during the 30 years of Roman Catholic-Huguenot wars and an instigator of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre. She had little power during the reign of her husband and that of her first son, Francis II, but on Francis's death in 1560 the government fell entirely into her hands. She ruled as regent for her second son, Charles IX, until he reached his majority in 1563, and she continued to dominate him for the duration of his reign. In her determination to preserve royal power at any cost, Catherine devoted her energies to maintaining a balance between the Protestant group known as the Huguenots, led by the French military leader Gaspard de Coligny, and the Roman Catholics, led by the powerful house of Guise. During the religious civil wars that began in 1562, Catherine, a Roman Catholic, usually supported the Catholics; sometimes, however, political expediency led her to switch her support to the Huguenots. Her political manipulations also affected the personal affairs of her family. In 1560 she arranged for her daughter, Elizabeth of Valois, to become the third wife of the powerful Roman Catholic king of Spain, Philip II. In 1572 Catherine found it propitious to marry another daughter, Margaret of Valois, to the Protestant king Henry of Navarre, who later became Henry IV, king of France. Later in 1572 she found the growing Huguenot influence over her son Charles, the French king, frightening; accordingly, she instigated the plot to assassinate the Protestant leader Coligny that led to his death and the deaths of an estimated 50,000 other Huguenots in the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre (1572). After the death of Charles in 1574 and the accession to the throne of her third son as Henry III, Catherine's power declined. Apart from her political role, Catherine was a patron of the arts. Her interest in architecture was demonstrated in the building of a new wing of the Louvre Museum, in initiating construction of the Tuileries gardens, and in building the château of Monceau.
