NOTE: Most researchers do NOT believe that the Mary shown here is his daughter!
Ninian Beall "came as an indentured Cromwellian Prisoner, served thirty-five years, lived to be 92, was six feet, 7 inches tall.... His thrift and perseverance made him an outstanding character of his day. He lived at `Fife Large', near what is now Georgetown, D.C." Georgetown is named for his youngest son, George. "The Beall family were people who stood pioneer life with fine physique...." - "Register of Maryland's Heraldic Families," Alice Norris Parran (Balt.: H.G.Roebuck & Son), p. 59. Ninian was Burgess, 1684; gave land for Presbyterian Church and presented it a silver Communion Service. Mary is not on the list of his known children! Largo, his birthplace, is on a lovely bay along the Firth of Forth NE of Edinburgh, Scotland. The surname Beal(l) or Bell is said to derive from ancient Druid priests known as "Na Belich" or the priests of Baal. There were 18 Beal, Beale and Bell immigrants to Maryland before 1700, and various Ninians, mostly from Scotland.
Ninian was a devout Presbyterian and helped begin the congregation in Calvert County, MD - he sent to Scotland for a pastor and in 1685 the Rev. Nathaniel Taylor and his congregation arrived (about 25 families, believed to include Mary and Sarah Beall/Bell). They were given land in present-day Prince George's County. Sarah m. into the Magruder family, which was close to Ninian. The Presbyterian settlement is now New Scotland, MD.
And internet correspondent reported (4/99) that his family history notes that Ninian Bell became Ninian Beall after he was captured by the English at the battle of Dunbar (1650).
Ninian Beall was original owner of much of present-day Washington, D.C. and a member of the Maryland Assembly. His heirs sold part of his estae but son George held on to a large piece along the Potomac River. By 1740 merchants and farmers were shipping tobacco from a wharf in a locale called Saw Pit Landing, which had been purchased from George Beall. In 1746 the colonial government of Maryland set up an inspection station in George Gordon's warehouse where Wisconsin Avenue and M Street intersect today. A sixty-acre town was laid out along the Potomac in the warehouse vicinity in 1751, at first called the Town of George and later Georgetown.
A Ninian Beall, around 1790, sold 330 acres of his vast holdings in southeast Washington to William Benning, who built a bridge across the Anacostia River and a house which survived well into the 20th century. After Benning died, his nephew Anthony purchased the farm, and in turn sold it in 1833 to Levi Sheriff, a Maryland merchant. Over the next decade Sheriff amassed 542 aces and owned 19 slaves who worked the land. Sheriff Road in southeast Washington and Prince Georges County, Maryland is named for him.

See "The Spencers: A Personal History of an English Family," Charles Spencer (NY: St. Martin's Press, 1999), p. 6. This Despenser line is from "Pedigrees of Some of Emperor Charlemagne's Descendants," by Aileen Lewers Langston and J. Orton Buck, Jr. Confirmation of this ancestry is needed. Thomas was known as Lord Despencer of Glamorgan. He was executed at Bristol. Cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_le_Despencer,_1st_Earl_of_Gloucester
http://www.jacksonsweb.org/hambry.htm cites Burke's Dormant & Extinct Gentry, p 167, offering: "He was also known as 1st Earl of Gloucester. He 'Thomas Despencer, 2nd Baron Despencer, summoned to parliament 30 November, 1395, and 18 July, 1397. This nobleman, who was known as Lord Despencer of Glamorgan, was in the expedition to Ireland, made in the 18th Richard II, and in the 21st of the same reign, having the sentence of banishment reversed, which had been passed by parliament in 15 Edward II, against his great grandfather, Hugh Despencer the Younger, was created Earl of Gloucester, 21st Richard II, anno 1337, by reason of his descent through Eleanor, wife of the said Hugh, from the de \Clare\s, Earls of Gloucester. In the petition which his lordship presented for the reversal of Hugh his ancestor's banishment, it was set forth, that the said Hugh, at the time possessed no less than fifty-nine lordships in different counties; 28,000 sheep; 1,000 oxen and steers; 1,200 kine, with their calves; 40 mares, with their colts of two years; 160 draught horses; 2,000 hogs; 3,000 bullocks; 40 tuns of wine; 600 bacons; four score carcasses of martinmas beef; 600 muttons in his larder; 10 tuns of cider; armour, plate, jewels, and ready money, better than 10,000 pounds; 36 sacks of wool, and a library of books.' 'Upon the marriage of the Earl of Gloucester, he obtained from King Richard II. a grant of divers manors; but adhering to that unfortunate monarch, he was degraded from his earldom, and dispossessed of most of his lands by the first parliament of Henry IV.; and before the same year elapsed, being taken prisoner, in an attempt to fly the kingdom, at Bristol, and being condemned by a vote of the House of Commons to die, he was carried into the market-place and there beheaded by the rabble...'.

[19652] William emigrated in 1633, one year before his brother, Thomas. As one of Edmund Quensey's servants, William was admitted to the First Church of Boston 9 Feb 1634. With Thomas, he was a firm supporter of the Rev. John Sheelwright, and elected to follow the banished pastor to New Hampshire where they founded Exeter ("the Falls of the Paschataqua"). The brothers signed the Exeter Combination there 4 Dec 1639, an agreement for self-government. See http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hwbradley/aqwg1149.htm#24432 and See "The Great Migration Begins," R. C. Anderson (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1995), Vol. 3, pp. 1922-1924, with reports: As a Wheelwright supporter he was disarmed in 1637. He went to Exeter in 1639, but apparently did not stay long. On 18 Oct 1649 William witnessed the mark on Thomas Chabinock, the sagamore of Wells. In 1653, when the Bay took control of the lands now Maine, William did not gracefully submit, and was reported to the court for endangering the welfare of his neighbors and the peace of the community. On 25 Oct 1653 he was presented at York Court for 'casting an aspersion upon the magistrates of the Bay'; he was admonished and paid a fine of 2s. 6d. On 29 Jun 1654 he was presented for 'denying the College to be any ordinance of God and therefore it was not his judgement to give anything to it, when there was something demanded of him for it'. At Wells [now in ME] he was drawing wine in 1649. On 29 Apr 1661 he was allowed to draw beer at Boston for the year ensuing. The license was renewed 1662-1669. For 1668-69 he was also licensed to keep a house of public entertainment. In his will, dated 18 Apr 1670 and probated 4 Jun 1670, [additions from "Abstracts of Early Suffolk Wills", New England Historic Genealogical Register (NER) Vol. 48 p.458] "William Wardell of Boston" bequeathed to "my dear wife Elizabeth Wardell the one-half of my now dwelling house in Boston" during her natural life and also all moveables in the house, "out of which she shall pay unto my daughter Rachel Wardell" £25 [paid in furniture]; to "my wife's daughter Hannah Gillet" £21 [paid in household stuff on day of marriage or at eighteen years]; to my wife's daughter Deborah" £20; to "my eldest son Uzall Wardwell the other half of my now dwelling house," and the whole house to be his at the decease of William's wife, Uzall to pay to "my son Elihu Wardell" £40; to "my daughter Leah, wife to Will[iam] Tower," 10s.; to "my daughter Meribah, wife to Francis Pitfield [sic] [Littlefield] of Wells," 10s., to "my daughter Mary, wife to Nathaniel Rust," 10s., residue to son Uzall Wardwell, he to be sole executor; "my loving friends James Everill & Will[iam] Bartholomew" to be overseers. [Witnesses, Ambrose Dawes, Joseph Wheeler, Wm. Bartholmew, James Everell. Inventory, 30 April, 1670, appraised by Isaack Walker, Richard Woodde, William Parson]".
