From 1156 he restored the lost territories of the ancient kingdom of Deheubarth and established more or less peaceful coexistence between ferocious rival powers. In 1172 Henry II appointed him as justiciar for South Wales. Rhys is credited with the first eisteddfod and under his patronage the Welsh arts flourished.
"A blood thirsty war of succession between Rhys's sons brought grief and tragedy to his final years. Rhys negotiated an unlikely alliance with William de Braose in an effort to establish his older son, Gruffydd, as his heir. Gruffydd married Matilda, the marcher lord's daughter. In 1189 Gruffydd fought and captured his younger half-brother Maelgwn, assisted by his father. Gruffydd then handed Maelgwn over to William de Braose, who held him in captivity for three years.
"Rhys failed to reconcile his sons before plague took his life in 1197: Deheubarth disintegrated. Gruffydd gained a short-lived advantage in the disastrous family feud and when he died in 1201 his sons Owain and Rhys looked to another rising star for protection."

[12203] Find A Grave memorial 101393723 offers: "Wife of Thomas Stradling of St Donats in Glamorgan, who died in his youth, and Sir Rhys ap Thomas, K.G., privy councillor, chamberlain, governor, justiciar, and seneschal of most of Wales, Jenett died on Feb. 5, 1533/34 at Picton Castle, near Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire. Sister of full blood to Sir David Mathew, lord of St Fagan's Castle, Sir William Mathew, K.B., lord of Radyr, and Morgan Mathew. By her first husband Jenett was the mother of Sir Edward Stradling, Harry Stradling, and Jane, wife of Sir William Griffith of Penrhyn. Jenett was the only legitimate daughter of Thomas Mathew, lord of Radyr in Glamorgan de jure uxoris, who was married to Katherine, daughter of Morgan ap Llewelyn, lord of Radyr, a descendant of Iestyn ap Gwrgant, last ruler of the royal house of Morgannwg and a descendant of Saint Tewdrig himself. She was a granddaughter of Sir Dafydd ap Mathew, lord of Llandaff and seneschal of the cathedral there, standard bearer to Edward IV at the battle of Towton (1461), by his wife Gwenllian, daughter of Sir Dafydd ap Gwilym of Y Cappel in Monmouthshire [brother of Tomas ap Gwilym of Llansantffraed]. Jenett was descended through a direct male line from Aeddan ap Gwaithfoed, who took the Crusader's Cross from Archbishop Baldwin in 1188."
