INDEX

[5353] "Henry was the most hapless of monarchs. He was so honest and well-meaning that he might have made a good ruler in quiet times. But he was crushed by the burden of his inheritance. He had not the genius to find a way out of the French entanglement or the skill to steer a constitutional monarchy between rival factions." - Encyclopaedia Britannica, `56, 11:437. He was buried in Chertsey Abbey, but his remains were moved to St. George's Chapel, Windsor in 1484.

"The Moores of Mariaville, Maine" tree in Ancestry.com in 2015 states James is son of Benjamin Kenniston (b. ca. 1750) citing the certification of birth of a James Kenniston, b. 9 Nov. 1789 in Lisbon, Grafton Co., NH to Benjamin and wife Sally. But the year seems wrong, unless it is incorrect in my records.
Note that his data indicates he was 25 years older than his wife! Could Mary Ames have been wife of another James? Rick Fisher (2/27/97) offers that James' wife is Sally Robbins, and that Mary Ames may be his second wife, or even wife of a son, James (III), if there was one. [The Amherst, ME Town Clerk stated that James died 17 May 1870; the date I have used is from Vivian Inez Kenniston.] The surname is also found Kenerson, etc., but was originally Kynaston. The Penguin Dictionary of Surnames, by Basil Cottle (1967) traces it from the Anglo-Saxon meaning Royal Peace's farm. There are two places in Herfordshire bearing the name. Ancestry.com suggests the origin of the surname: "English: possibly a habitational name from a lost or unidentified place, most likely in Dorset or Somerset, where the surname occurs most frequently. Alternatively, it may be from the Old English personal name Cynestan."
The 23 Aug 1850 census of Glenburn, Penobscot Co., ME lists James, farmer, age 64, with real estate valued at $500, born in NH, with wife Mary, age 41, also born in NH, and children (b. in ME): Joseph A. (age 17), Louisa (16), Moses A. (12). Glenburn is northeast of Amherst.
The 21 June 1860 census of West Glenburn, ME lists James Keniston [sic], farmer, age 73, , b. in NH, with Mary A., age 49, b. in ME, and Isabella Keniston, age 15.

Notes for further research:
The first known Kenerson settler was John (m. Agnes, r. Strawberry Banke - Portsmouth, NH), arriving about 1638, killed by American Indians in 1677 - had six sons. (See "New England Annals, Chapter Six," Laird C. Towle, Ed. [Bowie, MD: Heritage Books, 1980], p. 18.) A Jeremiah Kenniston was b. 1785 in ME and r. Eaton, NH. There is said to be a large MSS on the Kennistons in the NEGHS, Boston. Hampton, NH VR include the marriage of James Kennison and Deborah Greenought of Rye 9 Aug 1779; and (from provincial court records) the marriage of Christopher Keniston and Mary Muchmore, both of Portsmouth and living at Greenland, 4 October 1677, solemnized by Commissioner Samuel Dalton. The 1790 census of Stratham, Rockingham Co., NH lists a James Kennistion head of household with a son under age ten - this might be our James, b. 1783?
"Immigrants to New England, 1700-1775," Ethel Stanwood Bolton (Baltimore: Genealogical Pub. Co., 1997), pp. 103-104 lists John Kenniston of Nottingham, NH, emigrated from Scotland in 1746 after the battle of Colloden Moor, b. in Scotland; wife unknown; children: David, Joseph, Issac, Joshua, Samuel, Thomas (- ref. Greene's "Boothbay," p. 554).
The Kenniston surname traces its ancestry as a family of Boernician origin before the year 1100 and appears first in the ancient records in Lothian. "Surnames of the United Kingdom," Henry Harrison (Baltimore: Gen. Pub. Co., 1969) I:246 & 258, states that Kynnaston is found in Salop, that the ancient name was Kineverdeston = Cyneferd's Estate - "the personal name is a compound of Old English 'cyne-', royal, and 'fero', mind, spirit: + 'tun,' estate, etc." As Kynastone the surname means belonging to Kynastone (Hereford), app. Kynestan in the 13th cent. = "the Royal Stone" (Castle or Monument), from the Old English 'cyne' (royal) + 'stan' (stone).

A review of the pedigree of Kynaston of Shropshire shows that the name Robert was very rarely used in that family. In fact the only of this name living in the last half of the sixteenth century was robert Kynaston, second son of Ellis and Iowry (Trevor) Kynaston of Pontesbury, Shropshire. Little is known of this Robert Kynaston other than he married Katherine Juan. the names of his Children and the date and place of his death are not known. Whether or not he was the Robert Kinaston who serviced as High Sheriff of Manchester is a matter of speculation at this time.
Henry Kiniston, his life and Children are suppoe to have come to New England in the spring of 1623 in the ship "Margaret & John." In the Spring of that year Mason, the proprietor of New Hampshire, established two fishing and trading settlements one at Shrawberry Hank, now Portsmouth. Several dozen ships came over the first year bringing settlers. The names of some of ships are known but the "Margaret & John" is not among them. More than half of the first settlers died during the first year. The settlement at Portsmouth abandoned in 1626 and resettled again in 1630.
The fate of Henry Kiniston is not known, but quite probably he, his wife, and son, James, and his daughter, Mary wre among those who died during the first year as nothing further is found about them.

Henry Kiniston Keniston, according to the source and manuscript history of "John Keniston and His descendants" referes to an "Old England book" in the Genealogical Society in Salt Lake city, Utah, which states that he was born in Manchester, Lancashire, England on the 13th of Jan, 1916, son of Henry Keniston and wife Elizabeth Leepze, daughter of Thomas and Hannah Leeze of Manchester.
Henry Kiniston, according to the same source was born in Manchester on Jan. 22, 1575 the son of Robert Kinaston, High Sheriff of Manchester and descendant of the Kynaston of Shropshire. the other children of Henry and Elizabeth Kiniston, all born in Manchester, where Allen born March 23, 1607, Mary born April 3, 1608. and James born May 12, 1611.[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 29, Ed. 1, Tree #0811, Date of Import: Oct 5, 1999}
Henry Kiniston (Keniston) was born in Lancashire, England and Married Dorothy ????.
According to Eldin Kenison, an old English book in the Genealogy Library at Salt Lake City, Utah, says that John Keniston came to America with his older brother Allen [TAKEN FROM HOTTEN'S "OUR EARLY EMIGRANT ANCESTER"].
Allen Keniston, Found as a Freeman in Salem, Ma. March 13, 1640. He arrived in America in the "Mary and John" Ship about 1623. He of Warwick Squeak Virginia, planter, deposed on Nov. 13, 1639 "He lived in Virginia for 17 years" (From --New York Genealogical and Biographical Record] Genealogical Notes from High Court of Admiralty Examanations. Vol x. Lvii-1916. Allen owned land in Salem, Mass. Meadow land in 1637. It was decided that he could have Lot No. 17, about 2 acres in 1647.
Town of Salem, Ma. Granted 200 acres to Mr. Keniston's also speaks of "His place" May 17, 1647 Sargeant Porter and Mr. "Konnystone" was chosen to see to finishing of Strongwater Bridge, thus over Butts Brook, on Washington St. in south Peobody, Mass. His will as of Nov. 10. 1648 names his wife Dorothy. No Children found. It is possible that John of Portsmouth, NH 1646 was their son? no records as yet- Oct. 1956 - have been found.

From Hotten's "Our Early Emigrant Ancestors":
Allen Keniston arrived on the "Margaret and John" Muster of Inhabitants of Pashehays and the name taken Jan. 30th. 1624 belonging to the Cooperation of James Town. (Virginia had the right of all the Atlantic Coast of America in our early records.) Allen Keniston Probate Records, Essex Co. Ma. Estate of Allen Keniston of Salem, Mass. Will.

https://www.houseofnames.com/kenniston-family-crest offers: "The forbears of the name Kenniston once lived in or near some now-lost place called Kynaston, which experts agree was probably in the English border county of Shropshire. The surname Kenniston belongs to the category of habitation names, which are derived from pre-existing names for towns, villages, parishes, or farmsteads.
Early Origins of the Kenniston family
The surname Kenniston was first found in Shropshire, where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor of Kinnerly, some say before the Norman Conquest of England by Duke William of Normandy in 1066. Conjecturally they are descended from the Princes of Powys in Wales, through Griffith, son of Joerweth Goch, Lord of Mochnan, younger son of Meredith, Prince of Powis who took refuge in Shropshire. King Henry III of England gave him lands in that county. He married Matilda, the heiress of Ralph le Strange by whom he acquired the Manor of Kinnerly. Griffith' son, Griffith Vychan settled at Tre-gynvarth, which, when anglicized, is Kynvarth's Town, which, when spoken, became slurred into Kynastown, or Kynaston.
