[22969] John (a) married (poss 7 Aug 1559) or c1570 Elizabeth Wentworth of South Elmsall, and (b) married Grace Spencer - for this line, see the unverified site http://users.senet.com.au/~johda/dayuk/pedigree0005.htm Ancestry.com offers: "Day Name Meaning - English: from a pet form of David. English: from the Middle English personal name Day(e) or Dey(e), Old English Dæi, apparently from Old English dæg 'day', perhaps a short form of Old English personal names such as Dægberht and Dægmund. Reaney, however, points to the Middle English word day(e), dey(e) 'dairy maid', '(female) servant' (from Old English d?ge, cognate with Old Norse deigja 'female servant', ultimately from a root meaning 'to knead', and related to the word for dough), which he says came to be used for a servant of either sex. Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Deaghaidh (see O'Dea). Scottish: from an Anglicized form of the Gaelic personal name Daìdh, a colloquial form of David. Welsh: from Dai, a pet form of the personal name Dafydd, Welsh form of David."

[2703] Henry, second son of Edmund, was made Earl of Leicester by King Edward II who refused him the Lancaster title and estates of his brother Thomas. When Queen Isabella took up arms against her husband in 1326, Earl Henry joined her and was gaoler of King Edward II at Kenilworth Castle. When Edward III became King, Earl Henry became Earl of Lancaster and secured his brother's lands, becoming also Steward of England. In 1328 he tried to overthrow Mortimer but failed, then making peace with the King, and finally succeeding against Mortimer. Earl Henry then became blind and retired from public life. {-ref.: Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1956 Ed., 13:642} See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Plantagenet,_3rd_Earl_of_Lancaster and cf. http://www.geneajourney.com/plntgnt.html (not verified).
