Notes for David Boydston: Boydstun Family reseachers have attributed two marriages to David Boydstun.
1. Mahhala or Mehitable Snow (m. about 1736 per these same reseachers) (DAR Partiot lndex lists David's wife as Mehitable Snow - see DAR #659355 ADD 0718). Their children: Sabra, Cynthia, _____, Malinda, George b. abt 1737, James b. about 1738, David b. about 1740, and Nancy b. about 1745.
2. Sarah Pruitt, daughter of Samuel Pruitt and Elizabeth Hawker (see his son, James Boydstun Sr.-- did he marry his own aunt or am I impossibly confused? Their children: Priscilla, Jesse, Lesina, William b. about 1753, and Catherine b. about 1775. Other researchers reverse the marriages. I have entered the DAR marriage to Mehitable Snow, although I have also entered the secound marriage to Sarah Pruitt, even though the DAR does not list this marriage. I have attributed the children b. to David Boydstun to the marriage to Mehitable Snow, as DAR lists her death in 1811 in Harwick, MA, and this would accommodate all the children. I do this to try and include the research on later generations done by myself and others. Some may say this is not a correct lineage, and they are probably right, but until I am able to do the research myself, it will have to do. My apologies to Mrs. Weaver and Mrs. Domonoske! The DAR lineage also included sons Benjamin and Thomas, not listed on several other lists, including that of Mrs. Domonoske. Another researcher mentions only one marriage to Mahala Snow and the line is limited to this individual's direct line down from David. This same researcher has the following Boydstun line back to the year 1460.

Notes for Sarah Pruitt: According to records found by Mrs. Domonoske in Powell Valley, TN, the charter petition for the Davis Creek Baptist Church there dated 1 Oct. 1797 has the name of Sarah Boydstun. Charter members, according to Mrs. Domonoske, give clues for the children of David and Sarah, including the possibility of Catherine Boydstun and Priscilla Box. Other sons may have been John, Robert, and Thomas Boydstun in the 1810 census records of Logan Co., KY.
There was also a land grant of 640 acres granted to Jesse Boydston in 1783 in Davidson Co., TN. This Jesse was a revolutionary soldier of VA, serving in the 1st VA State Regiment.

There have been two known books written on the Boydstun family -- One in the 1930's by Gustine Weaver, and THE BOYDSTUN-BOYDSTON FAMILY (3rd edition), 1980, by Gladys Boydstun Domonoske. The latter, by far is the most completely documented and raises some serious questions about the family line as set forth by Mrs. Weaver. It must be noted, however, that the Daughters of the American Revolution rejected Mrs. Domonoske's proposed lineage, involving James and David Boydstun, inserting on her DAR application papers those dates, places, children and spouses which more conform to Mrs. Weaver's original outline. While Mrs. Domonoske's research seems excellent and thorough, it is difficult to image that an organization so devoted to accuracy in lineage (many of the early lineages accepted by DAR have now been questioned by DAR itself, and current applicants forced to re-prove them) is in total error. Therefore, until there is a better researcher than Mrs. Domonoske, or Margaret R. Bates, I have entered the lineage of James Boydston, Sr. and David Boydston as accepted by DAR, and as gleaned from the records of Mrs. Weaver and several sets of application papers for DAR, and other published sources. It should be noted that I question accuracy of this lineage myself, as did Mrs. Domonoske. No great effort has been made to insert contradictory information except where those conflicts bring family lines to a screeching halt. Interested researchers can find both Mrs. Weaver's and Mrs. Domonoske's books in the DAR Library in Washington, D.C. as well as at many other libraries. - Margaret Richardson Bates, September, 1997.
"Over The Misty Blue Hills - The Story of Cocke Co., TN," by Ruth Webb O'Dell: James and Thomas Boydston [NOTE: article has nothing to do with Thomas, but with William and James] William Boydston (sometimes written Boilston or Boydstone), was one of the earliest settlers in the Co. James Broydston, a TN Revolutionary soldier (McAllister's "VA Militia in the Revolutionary War", page 264), was an older brother of William, and seemingly one of the two Boydstons who were in the battle of Point Pleasant, on the Ohio, October 18, 1774. James later moved from what became Cocke Co. to Rutherford Co., North Carolina, where he had a grant of land in 1790. They served in defense of the frontier under Captain Daniel Smith, who was later Secretary of the Southwest Territory and twice elected to the United States Senate from TN. He took part in defending Castlewood, too. Later, Boydston moved to lower part of Greene Co., then North Carolina, on that part which was later Cocke Co. Ramsey in his "Annals," (page 190), and Williams in his "TN During The Revolution," gives an account of an Indain raid, in 1779, on his house, which was evidently fortified, in which four warriors were killed and a number wounded. The forayers were chased out of the settlements by force under Captain(later Brigadier - General) George Doherty. Boydston served during the early part of the Revolutionary War as a VA militiaman, and later as such in the North Carolina (TN Part) forces under Colonel John Sevier. His name appeared on the tax list of Greene Co. in 1783, Greene Co. then covering part of Cocke Co. A daughter, Priscilla, m. the Rev. Jacob Faubion, of French Huguenot descent, and they were the progenators of a large family who lived in or near Old Newport.

Marriage Notes for Mary Pruitt and James Boydston: There was speculation that James Boydston Sr. may have m. twice, Mary Prewett/Pruitt first (ca 1761), and Tabitha Smith, second. One scenario has Mary Prewett/Pruitt, b. 1738 and James Boydston, b.1736 at Piney Ridge, Dorchester Co., MD, marrying in 1757. Their first child would then be Mahulda, b. 1758 in Frederick Co., MD, who m. in 1780 Thomas Hill and went to Logan Co., KY. This same scenario has the various children falling in line until the supposed death of Mary Prewett/Pruitt about 1767. Following the same scenario, James then m. Tabitha Smith, who bore 6 of his children, and d., coicidently, the same day the DAR says that Mary Prewett/Pruitt d., May 22, 1809. This Tabitha Smith is said to be of Worcester Co., MD and the daughter of John Smith and his wife, Mary. There are some additional children with this scenario: Mahala, b. 1774, m. Thomas Arnold; Sabra, b. 1778, m. Samuel Lusk, and Malinda, b. 1780, m. William Adams. These children are all said to have gone to KY. This scenario includes 18 children, b. every two years, without even a break for grieving the death of the first wife. It also omits children Bartlett, Reuben and Jacob. The DAR lists James b. September 23, 1747 at Green Co., PA and dying February 6, 1814, Logan Co., KY. They list Mary Prewett/ Pruitt, b. January 21, 1745 at Frederick Co., MD, and dying May 22, 1809. With a few date adjustments, this would allow for all the children to be b. by Mary Prewett/Pruitt except Mahulda, who m. Thomas Hill. And who knows who she is? She isn't that far off in age to be a sister to James Boydston Sr. instead of a daughter, in the DAR scenario. The DAR scenario includes Bartlett, Reuben, and Jacob, the three youngest. Complicating the whole thing is that he children of all the Boydstons seem to bear the same names, and the parts of the country in which they lived underwent state/district/Co. reorganizations. Clearly, both these sets of research cannot be accurate. The confusing element is that they both seem to include certain of the same individuals.
