[49588] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine], 31 August 2001," p. 28: "Portland and Bangor - Sylvia Loreta (Beal) Carter of Larrabee Village, Westbrook, died Aug. 30, 2001, at the Maine Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born Feb. 16, 1912, at Beals Island, the daughter of Eugene and Elizabeth (Lenfesty) Beal. She was raised in Harrington and Milbridge. She graduated as valedictorian of the Class of 1932 at Milbridge High School. She was one of the last two living members of her class and regularly attended the annual reunions of her class right up to the year of her death. She married Kenneth W. Carter of Montville on Jan. 1, 1935. Four children were born to them, one of whom, Andrea Lynn, died in infancy. After raising her family, she became actively employed in the women's garment business. She was employed for several years as the manager of the ladies' clothing department at the Sears & Roebuck Department Store in Bangor. After she and her husband moved to Portland in 1963, she worked for A.H. Benoit in that city and became their New York buyer for the women's clothing department. She was later employed at Ward Brothers at the Maine Mall in South Portland. After retirement, she became active in the Order of the Eastern Star, Deering Chapter, and served in many of the offices of that organization, being chosen twice to be its Worthy Matron. She was especially proud of and took great satisfaction from her association with the Star and enjoyed the many friends she made there. She was a member of the Warren Congregational Church of Westbrook, where she served for many years as a Deacon of the church. She had many friends in the church and remained an active communicant with the church until the time of her death. Her husband died in 1983. She is survived by a brother, Franklin Beal and his wife, Elizabeth of Milbridge, with whom she enjoyed a close and loving relationship to the time of her death. Surviving also are two daughters, Mrs. R.C. (Jane) Smithson and Mrs. Richard (Barbara) Arbour of Florida; and a son, Gene Carter and his wife, Judith of Falmouth. Also surviving are five grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren."
