[23311] Otto's life and times are dramatically portrayed in "The Last Apocalypse: Europe at the Year 1000 A.D.," James Reston, Jr. (New York: Doubleday, 1998), Chapters 11 & 12. Also see "The Forge of Christendom: The End of Days and the Epic Rise of the West," Tom Holland (Little, Brown, 2008). http://www.san.beck.org/AB17-FeudalEurope.html reports "Otto III had just been crowned at Aachen when his father died; but he was still only three years old. His mother Theaphano was Greek and his grandmother Adelaide Italian; but they acted as regents. Heinrich the Younger was released after being in prison five years, and he gained the support of Trier archbishop Egbert, Magdeburg archbishop Gisler, Metz bishop Dietrich, and Slavs. Saxony's Bernard I and Mainz archbishop Willigis supported young Otto III; but the boy's guardian, Cologne archbishop Warin, allowed Heinrich to capture the king. Heinrich was proclaimed king, and Poland's Mieszko and Bohemia's Boleslav II did homage to him. With civil war threatening, a council at Burstadt near Worms persuaded Heinrich to restore Otto III to Willigis, Swabian duke Conrad, and his mother Theaphano, who arrived from Italy with Adelaide to take over the government. Heinrich offered to help France's Lothair take over Lotharingia; but he could not bring himself to betray Germany and did not join Lothair's invasion that overcame the resistance of Godfrey and his sons to take Verdun in 985. Then Heinrich the Quarreler submitted to Otto III and was given back his old duchy of Bavaria. ...By 995 Otto III was considered old enough at 15 to rule for himself, and the next year he traveled to Italy. Otto III returned to fight the Slavs, negotiate a marriage with a Byzantine princes, and then went back to Rome again in 998, leaving Germany to be ruled by his aunt Matilda, abbess of Quedlinburg. After German chancellor Hildibald of Worms died in 998, Otto III gave the chancellor of Italy, Heribert, administration of the entire empire. The next year Heribert also became archbishop of Cologne. In 1001 while Otto III was preoccupied with Rome, rebels were turning to Duke Heinrich of Bavaria; but Heinrich wisely remembered his father's counsel and remained loyal. Otto III died in 1002." This line is from "Descendants of John Knell Niles" at http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/c/h/Michael-S-Schrage in 2012 and is not verified. This file offers:

John Niles is generally accepted as the original progenitor of all families by the Niles name in North America. John initially settled in Dorchester, MA around 1634 and then in 1636 moved to Braintree, MA. He was known in Braintree, MA as Old John Niles.

"John was evidently of humble extraction as appears by his title of "Goodman" and his wife as being addressed as "Goody" Niles. In colonial times the title of Mister was strictly reserved for persons of education and condition and the line between Mister and Goodman was strongly marked. His son, Nathaniel gave the family a start on the upward road by his marraige with Sarah Sands, the daughter of James Sands of RI. James Sands was a man of extensive landed property, the major part of which seems to have descended to his daughter as Nathaniel was evidently prosperous and able to give his son Samuel a liberal education. From this time on the Niles appear to have been able in each generation to give educations to their sons. Nathaniel and Sarah had a Rev. Samuel Niles "
-------------------

Jeffrey Niles posted in "Niles Family Genealogy Forum" in http://genforum.genealogy.com 7 July 2012: "'Niles' may have an older connection to 'Knell' in Old English, but there does seem to be a bit of confusion regarding the John who immigrated to Massachusetts in the first place. There was a certain John Knill who immigrated from Wales and came on board the ship, 'Speedwell.' But our John Nile/Niles/Nyle most likely arrived from Dorset-shire (probably Beaminster). There was a large group of emigrants who left this area of England around the same time because of the economy and the failing reign of King Charles. And they moved to Dorchester. John Niles' children bear a great similarity in their names to the Nile/Nyle families of Beaminster, Dorset, particularly the family of John Nyle and Johane Paviot who did have a son named John born about the same time as ours who settled in Braintree."

[4466] Jacob is not definitely known to be a child of Isaac and Elizabeth, and does not appear in any other list except in the baptismal register of Hoffman (or Hope Memorial) Lutheran Church near Smithton, South Huntington Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA, where he was baptised 16 Oct 1814. Isaac and Elizabeth had two other children baptised here. Did Jacob die before they moved to Ohio? Email 28 April 2004: "I read your site, and may have corresponded with you before about Jacob Pollin Paullin, b. 1814 PA. In checking through my information I believe he married Hannah Graves and they moved to Louisa Co., IA in 1856. If you are interested in adding it to your tree, I would be happy to share what I have, or you can check the 1856 Louisa Co., IA census records. On the re-copy someone put Jason as the youngest girl, but on earlier records it appeared to me to be Jasmine. I only found Jacob on that census, as only his family was listed on the 1860 census. I presume he may have died, even though he was quite young. A Graves descendant, Bettijane Larson ([email protected])."
