[48464] "The Indiana Gazette [Indiana, Pennsylvania], 3 July 1944,"p. 1: Saddened and shocked by the news from the War Department that her son, Staff Sergeant Harold Bair, been killed in action in France, received June 21, was given as the cause of the death Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock of Mrs. Mary Amanda (Fettermam) Bair of Rossiter R. D. 1. A heart attack was the immediate cause of death. The deceased was born September 4, 1886, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Fetterman, both deceased, and had spent her entire life in the community in which she died. She was a member of the Smithport Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband, O. B. Bair, and the following children: Mrs. William C. Cessna, Glen Campbell; Mrs. Don Buchanan, Gipsy; Mrs. William Myers, Rossiter; Arval, Conway, Laird, Glen Campbell; Edna and Donald at home; 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Donald Bair, who was reared in the home also survive. A memorial service for Sgt. Bair will be held at the time of funeral services for the mother in the Methodlst Church, Smithport, Wednesday. July 9 at 2 p. m. Rev. Fray will be in charge and interment will be in Devers Cemetery, Banks Township."

The unverified One World Tree at Ancestry.com in 2007 states she was b. in Ilbesheim, Pfalz. Christina Straub states "Abigail" immigrated on the ship "Royal Union" from Rotterdam to Philadelphia, PA and offers somewhat different information for her parents.

He helped build the Yellow Springs Hospital near his home in Chester County, which would soon be used as a field hospital for the casualties of the war. His wife, Abigail, became a recurrent visitor to the hospital, spending much of her time ministering to the sick and wounded soldiers. As a result of her devotion to help the suffering, she contracted typhus, which would later cause her untimely death. [Cf. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pacheste/chester_military_rw_hosp.htm and http://www.yellowsprings.org/exhibits/women/Pages/RevWarHospital.htm] On September 11, 1777, Washington encountered General William Howe's army at the Battle of Brandywine. He wisely decided to withdraw, saving his men to 'fight another day'. During his retreat, Washington and his staff officers stopped at the Rice farm and asked Abigail if they could have some water. She sent one of her daughters to retrieve a pitcher of water from their well, to which she added some sugar, spices, and rum, making a drink that was popularly known as 'flip'. Abigail handed the drink to him and said, 'Here, my Lord.' Washington quickly replied, 'We have no titles here, we are all brothers.' As General Washington drank this beverage, Abigail's five-year-old daughter, Susannah, approached him. Washington smiled, picked her up, and sat her on his knee while he finished his drink. For Abigail's contributions during the war, there is a chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in her name in Washington, DC. [Abigail Hartman Rice Chapter {DAR} merged with Emily Nelson Chapter in September 2003] There is also a plaque in her honor in the Bell Tower at Valley Forge. After the war, the Rices continued to farm their land and raise their family. Then, in 1789, Zachariah was struck with two overwhelming blows. The first was the death of his beloved wife, Abigail. She had succumbed to the typhus that she contracted during the war. She was buried at St. Peter's Church in Chester County. Shortly thereafter, Zachariah lost his land, along with 114 other families in Pikeland Township." Her original grave marker had this inscribed on it: "Some have children - Some have none. Here lies the mother of twenty-one." It continued "An account states that seventeen of her twenty-one children followed her body in procession to the grave; such a sight was never before seen in Pikeland and may never be again." [St. Peter's Lutheran Church Cemetery is at 1239 Clover Mill Road, Chester Springs, PA]
"The Flickinger Family History," Robert Elliott Flickinger (Des Moines, IA: Success Composition and Printing Co., 1927), p. 304 states her baptismal "name proved too long for daily use and through life she was called Abigail, which signifies 'a father's favorite'." [48922] The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, ME], 21 July 2021": "Franklin - George Thurston Pickard Jr., 81, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2021. George was born April 27, 1940, in Bangor, the son of George Pickard Sr. and Beulah (Meserve) Pickard. George is survived by his two sons, George Pickard III and his companion Anna Walls of Franklin and Scott Pickard and companion Debra Doughty of Eastbrook, and his daughter, Deborah Pickard, and her companion Stacey Curtis of Lamoine. George had eight grandchildren: Damian, Justin, Ryan, Cathy, Devi, George, Anna and Matthew. He also had 13 great-grandchildren. He loved all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly! George was always a hard worker and great provider for his family. He worked the majority of his life in the blueberry business, mainly at the former Agvest in Franklin. Whether working in the factory running the engine room or on the fields running the equipment he was always an exceptional worker and took pride in the job he did. He also gained a lot of great friends and memories. George not only had a huge heart, but he had a huge sense of humor. He truly loved to laugh, and his laugh was infectious. His laugh itself was funny and could brighten anyones day. His laughter will be dearly missed. After retirement he enjoyed camping with his wife and going to Linwood in Gouldsboro to listen to music. He also loved to do little buildings projects in his shop. He was able to attend a few races to watch his favorite drivers, the Carney Boys. He would get quite excited to retell the details of the races, especially if they won! George was predeceased by his wife, Kay, his four sisters, Patty, Dinny, Sandra and Judy, his daughter-in-law, Trudy Pickard, and his grandson, Damian Pickard. Also his beloved dog of 17 years, Sandy."
