[51147] "The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine], 22 April 2014": "Steuben - Thurston E. Pinkham, 82, went home to be with the Lord on April 18, 2014, at Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor, after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family. Thurston was born July 13, 1931, in Steuben, to Floyd and Ella (Strout) Pinkham and attended school in Steuben. Thurston served in the U.S. Navy from July 1948 to June 1953, receiving the United Nations Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal, and was assigned to the USS Wisconsin. He also served in the U.S. Air Force as an airman third class from March 1954 to November 1957, receiving the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and Korean Service Medal. Upon being honorably discharged from the military, Thurston returned home to Steuben. He worked at a variety of jobs over the next 57 years, including construction for E.L. Shea and at the Cutler Naval Station, boat building at Hinckleys, fabrication at Kelco Industries and maintenance for Sumner High School. Throughout this time he always came back to his roots on the ocean. He loved lobster and weir fishing and as late as last summer could be occasionally seen aboard the boat with his son, John. Thurston is survived by his wife of 59 years, Harriet (Stanwood); two sons, Elwood 'Bimbo' Pinkham and wife, Joan, and John Pinkham; one daughter, Adeline Kinghorn and husband, Steve, all of Steuben; grandchildren, Stephen Kinghorn and partner, Angela, of Franklin; Benjamin Kinghorn, Amber Pinkham, Jody Leighton and her husband, Joseph, all of Steuben; four granddaughters whom he adored, Mariah, Kaytlin, Anna and Kelly, all of Steuben. He is also survived by sisters, Jeannie Dow and Vangie McLain; brother, Richard 'Dickey' Pinkham; brother-in-law, Herbert Huckins; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Floyd and Ella (Strout) Pinkham; sister, Loretta 'Pep' Huckins; brothers-in-law, Arnold Dow and Darwood McLain. The joys of Thurstons life included being with his family; working on the water and talking on his VH radio, where he carried the handle 'Milkman'; giving to others; puttering around the yard; tinkering on his cars, trucks and anything mechanical; going on rides to look out over the ocean or watch the deer; and taking care of various animals that found their way to his door. He was always there for any of his family or friends. He has been a selfless and loving caregiver and companion to his wife during her illness during the last several years."
