As "Steve Hudack" [sic] he landed in New York 14 May 1895 as a bartender born in Austria (per Naturalization Application filed at Scranton, PA, which also gives his birth-date). He was naturalized at Scranton 13 Nov 1905 as a native of Austria. He and Anna were each 21 years old and both born in Austria according to their marriage certificate. Stephen died of diabetes; he was in the hotel business, then the grocery store business, and was famed for his homemade "kielbasi." His family is in the 1920 federal census in Dunmore Ward 6, Lackawanna Co., PA (and an Anna Moscow, age 52, is listed in the household) - he states he immigrated in 1895 and was b. in Hungary. In the 1930 federal census at Dunmore he states he was b. in Czechoslovakia. Apparently his family came from the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the lands were variously in Austria, Hungary and Czechoslovakia. His wife's notes 12 May 1981 state Stephen was b. 9 Oct 1881.
----------------------------------
"The Tribune [Scranton, PA], 19 November 1968," p. 10: "Stephen Hudak, 87, 1325 Madison Ave., Dunmore, died Sunday in Moses Taylor Hospital after an illness. His wife, the former Anna Muska, died in 1938. Born in Austria-Hungary, he resided in Dunmore the past 60 years and operated Hudaks Market for 40 years until his retirement in 1948. He was a member of St. Marys Byzantine Church and its Holy Name Society. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Margaret Harrington and Mrs. Frank Swadeba, Dunmore, and Mrs. Malvern Ayres, Philadelphia; five sons. John, at home; George, Michael and Joseph, all of Dunmore; and William, Washington, D.C.; two brothers, John, Dundalk, Md., and Michael, Phoenix, Ariz.; three sisters, Mrs. Michael Macinsky, Dunmore; Julia Hudak, this city, and Mrs. Andrew Dranchak, Lancaster; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Friday from the John J. Chipak Funeral Home, Madison Avenue and Mulberry Street, with mass at 9 a.m. in St. Marys Byzantine Church. Interment, St. Johns Cemetery, Minooka section."
