[7279] A sketch of his family is in "Biographical Encyclopedia of the Juniata Valley ..." (Chambersburg, PA: Runk & Co., 1897). George was a private in the PA Volunteers during the War Between the States - his discharge papers state he is 23 years old, 5'11" tall, has a light complexion, blue eyes, and is a carpenter. "The Perry County Democrat [New Bloomfield, PA], 20 January 1926," p. 3: "George S. Briner, Esq., a veteran of the Civil War and Register and Recorder of Perry county for two terms, died at his home in Carlisle Saturday afternoon, at the age of 85 years. The news of his death was received in Perry county with sincere sorrow. The deceased was a son of George and Magdalene (Seager) Briner and was born at Mt. Pleasant, in Jackson township, July 7, 1841. When a young man he learned the carpentering trade. After the Civil War broke out he enlisted in Company F, 208th Pennsylvania Volunteers, serving with honor from Sept 2, 1804, to June 2, 1865, participating in the battle of Fort Stedman andthe Siege of Petersburg. On his return home he engaged in farming and carpentering. On Dec. 19, 18_0, while at work building the barn of Samuel A. Johnston he fell from the roof, sustaining a compound fracture of the left leg, which left him a cripple for life. Mr. Briner was elected Register and Recorder of Perry county in 1875 on the Democratic ticket and was reelected in 1878. At the expiration of his term of office he engaged in the insurance business with his brother Daniel, first in Bloomfield and then in Newport. For many years he had been living in Carlisle, where he was an elder of St. Paul's Lutheran church. He was a man of high character and was widely known and respected. George S. Briner was married January 17, 1876, to Susan B., daughter of William and Rebecca (Balthaser) Moose. Mrs. Briner died in 1901. The surviving children are George M. and J. Frank Briner, Carlisle; W. Grier Briner, Narberth; Charles S. Briner, Detroit, Mich., and Miss Mary, at home. One sister, Mrs. Hannah M. Brown, of near Newville, is also living. The funeral was held yesterday with burial at Blain."

[2920] William owned and operated a service garage adjacent to their residence on the Akron-Canton Road a short distance from the homestead on which he was born. "The Akron Evening Times, 11 October 1920," p. 1: "William Briner, 38, Springfield rd., was found dead by his family this morning, a revolver bullet wound in his head. Briner, according to sheriffs deputies, committed suicide rather than be committed to the county jail on a charge of lunacy. Sheriff Pat Hutchinson Saturday received a report that Briner was demented, and went to the Springfield road home to take him in custody. A search of the house and vicinity failed to reveal Briner, who is thot to have been hiding. Sunday, Briner's twenty-year-old son came to the county Jail and asked the sheriff not to come for his father that day; that Briner would surrender himself Monday. This morning he was found dead. Sheriff's deputies said that, so far as is known, Briner has not previously been held on a lunacy charge. The report received Saturday was that he had been drinking and was exhibiting symptoms of insanity, the sheriff says. The dead man is survived by a wife and a son."

[50005] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 13 April 1942, pp. 1 & 15: "North Penobsot, April 12 - Mrs. Rachael A. Gray, daughter of a veteran of the War of 1812, died at her home here Saturday morning at the age of 105. Mrs. Gray, a native of Sedgwick, made her home at her farm here for the past 71 years, and in recent years her grandnephew and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Closson, have lived there with her. She remained active until a little over a year ago and when well past the century mark was able to take care of her own room, did much knitting and sewing, and often insisted upon helping with light household tasks. She was born Sept, 17. 1838. Her father, Nathan Closson, a veteran of the War of 1812, lived to be 88 years old. He entered the army at the age of 18 and was in the thick of the fighting in the Lake Erie section. When he failed to return to his home after the war he was given up for dead, and funeral services were held for him at Sedgwick, but a stranger who attended the services told Nathan's father, Joslah Closson, that he had heard the young man was alive and well and was employed in Connecticut. Josiah Closson went to Connecticut, where he found his son and brought him back to Sedgwick. Mrs Gray was one of seven children of Nathan and Mary Davis Closson. At the age of 16 she was married to Peter Gray. They had three children, of whom the only survivor is Velorus Gray, 84, who is now the oldest man in Penobscot. After the death of her first husband, Mrs. Gray married William Gray, who died a few years ago. Mrs. Gray, known to everyone in the community as 'Aunt Rachael,' was loved by all who knew her. She had a remarkable memory, and often told of incidents that happened in her childhood, and could remember some of the poems she learned in school. Surviving besides her son are five grandchildren, Nathan Gray of North Penobscot, Colby Gray of Castine, Mrs. Laura Staples of Blue Hill, Mrs. Alice Sawyer of Castine, and Ray Gray of Ellsworth Falls; 10 great-grandchlldren; and four great great-grandchildren, Colby and Lois Gray, children of Lester Gray of Bucksport, Howard Butler, son of Mrs. Franclne Butler, Ellsworth and Teddy Gray, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alton Gray, Blue Hill. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at the North Penobscot church and burial will be in Hillside cemetery."

[24871] James' ancestry shown here is disputed by Clyde and Lois Hill, who offer at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ohjeffer/BIOS/jamesnewell.html the following: "James Newell was born in northern Ireland in about 1745. He and his brothers, Hugh, and Robert with sisters, Jane and Margaret first settled in Washington Co, Pennsylvania at Buffaloe and Short Creek. In 1878, the family crossed the river into Ohio. He purchased a claim in 1879 at the Settlement of Short Creek, now Warrenton, Warren twp, Jefferson Co. OH. His will dated Sept. 29, probated Aug. 29, 1794 states he was 'a farmer in the Settlement of Short Creek, west of Ohio.' James' wife was Margaret Sparks who preceded him in death. They had eight children; Robert who married Cassie Hardesty, John who married Rachel Mathews, Jane who married Davison McWilliams, Samuel who married a 'Miss Polk', Thomas who married Harriet Flaharty (from whom I descend), Charles (single), Margaret who married Orestus Clark 1st, John Williamson 2nd, and Mary who married Stockton Briggs. James served in some capacity in the Revolutionary War in advanced age, lived in Indian territory in both PA and OH, and fathered sons who relayed tales of many adventures flat boating down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, moving to other areas of the country James Newell was born in northern Ireland in about 1745. He married Bessie Lorinda Haynes on 4 November 1921, in Portsmouth, Rockingham, New Hampshire, United States. They were the parents of at least 3 sons.
