[14444] Find A Grave memorial 147222335 offers: "Lot Whitcomb, (Nathaniel,* James,' Robert,' John.^) was married to Lydia Nye of North Bridgewater, Mass., December 9, 1762. He removed to Barnard, Vt., but was obliged to flee from the Indians and went back to Hardwick, Mass. ; later he returned to Barnard with his wife, and Mrs. OHve Durkee says that many times She has heard her grandmother Lydia say 'That at one time she was the handsomest woman in Barnard for she was the only woman there at the time.' In 1778 he was a member of the 'Committee of Safety,' as the first town meeting was called. He died April 7, 1797, and his wife February 22, 1831, both in Stockbridge, Vt. His grave is the oldest in Stockbridge Common burying ground." The LDS Church's unverified Pedigree Resource File reports that Lydia is daughter of Samuel Nye (b. 7 March 1714 in Middleboro, MA, son of Ichabod Nye and Elizabeth Bonum) and Lydia Benson (d. 30 June 1756 in New Braintree, MA, m. 23 June 1737 in Rochester, MA). Ancestry.com offers: "Nye Name Meaning - English (southeastern): topographic name arising from a misdivision of Middle English atten (e)ye which means either at the river or at the island, from Old English ea river and eg island respectively. Both these words were feminine in Old English, and so should have been preceded only by Middle English atter (see Rye), but distinctions of gender ceased to be carefully maintained in the Middle English period."
