[54965] Alfred is son of Alfred George Gray (1906-1993) & Beatrice Marie Stone (1907-1999; m. 30 August 1926). "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," Brownville - Alfred George Gray Jr., 89, passed away at Westgate Center for Rehabilitation and Alzheimer's Care in Bangor on March 23, 2023, after several years of failing health. On February 13, 2020, he suffered a mild stroke that put him into the hospital and then finally to the Westgate Nursing Home, where he's been getting excellent care. He was born in Brownville, June 4, 1933, the son of the late Alfred Sr. and Beatrice (Stone) Gray. He was predeceased by brothers, George Gray and wife, Bessie, and Leo Gray; and sisters, Betty Lancaster and husband, Willis, Teresa Pierce and husband, Victor, and Virginia Grant and husband, Keith. Alfred is survived by one sister, Violet Brown of Saco; and sister-in-law, Sandra of Lakeview. Fred leaves behind his wife of 69 years, Dorothy (Perkins) Gray; son, Daniel and wife, Vickie, and their two sons, Scott and Christopher and families; daughter, Jean and husband, Robert Brown, and their two daughters, Angie and Jamie, and families; daughter, Kathleen Pratt and her son, William, and daughter, Mallory, and their families, and betrothed, Rickey McCormick, of Brownville; son, Shawn Gray and son, Oliver of Freeport; several great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Fred didn't want a funeral when he passed away, so we will respect his wishes and not have a public gathering, but instead I will post something about his life. Fred, better known as Freddie to family and friends did many things during his life. He left school when he turned 16 and went to work at the Barnard slate quarry, where the boss taught him how to set dynamite, when that closed, he worked at a woodsman's camp helping the cook and serving the woodcutters their meals. Throughout the years, he drove pulp trucks and did mechanic work on them for Earl Gerrish, was fire chief of Brownville Fire Department and Brownville Deputy for 12 years, worked in the mill in Brownville as head electrician and foreman, and designed and built many of their machines. He worked at the chip mill and left there to go into business for himself as Gray Brothers Garage in Milo, where he asked his two brothers to join him. A year later they split the business and George went back to MA, Leo took the auto parts, and Fred and I retained the building as a repair garage. He built a wrecker and had a lot of business with that and sold used cars for several years. We changed the building over into a roller-skating rink and ran it as that for 15 years before he decided to retire. We moved to Perry and lived there for 14 years on our 30 acres and then back to our hometown of Brownville. There's no place like home."

Virginia Horler
Howard had no middle name, just initial "H". Nickname = Brick
According to his son, Ken, remembers that in about 1898, after graduating from Oakland High School, Howard joined a school friend and the friend's father (who was Captain of a sailing ship) for a trip to Alaska. Howard spent four years in Alaska which coincided with the Klondike Gold Rush. He staked out a claim in Prudhoe Bay after seeing oil seeping from ground because he thought it might be a coal deposit and later lost the claim because he did not improve it. A sailor on same ship jumped ship and later discovered gold in Nome.
Howard used a dog team to deliver mail between several Alaskan towns. During a bad snow storm, he had to make an emergency camp. After the storm the dogs were buried in snow but were fine after Howard located them by the steam coming up from mounds and then dug them out. Daughter, Jeanne, recalls that Howard rode a dog sled from Juneau to Nome and that he panned for gold.
In 1910, the Census lists Howard living with his wife, son and Mother-in-Law in Oakland, CA. He had worked all of 1909 as a solicitor for a Laundry Company and the family rented their home. Howard and May raised their family in three houses in Oakland located on Laguna Avenue, and at 2912 Delaware Avenue and 1307 or 2307 Boston Avenue (across from the Fruitvale School). He was also an amateur boxer.
On 12 Sep 1918 Howard H. Palmer registered for the draft with the US Military, resident at 2912 Delaware St., Oakland, age 39, born 10 Nov 1878, worked as laundryman for Crystal Laundry in Oakland, married to May F. Palmer of same address, height 5'8-3/4", blue eyes and auburn hair. signed Howard H. Palmer. (4-1-11 C No. 1823)
Howard and May divorced in 1924. He later married Stella Schwartz, who ran a boarding house in Oakland. They lived at the boarding house at 1905 - 5th Avenue in Oakland.
oward owned several laundry routes and contracted with Crystal Laundry in Oakland. Son, Ken, helped his Father deliver laundry on Saturdays. Howard had inherited tools to resole shoes, which he did.
Ken remembers his father as a friendly and generous person who knew many people because he was born and raised in Oakland. He also had a temper and punished his children if he thought it needed. He encouraged Curt to study and go to college (Ken was not interested at that time.)
Buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Oakland. He married (1) Frances May Larkin, married 22 Dec 1907 in Oakland, CA, b. 8 May 1890 in Visalia, Tulare, California, (daughter of John J. Larkin and Clara Irene Conley) d. 5 May 1939 in Sacramento, Sacramento, California. Frances: Shortly after May was born, her Father left and then her parents divorced. While May's Mother, Clara, worked as a seamstress in Fresno, CA, May's Grandmother, Melissa Conley, raised May during her early years along with Grandmother's Conley's youngest son, Robert, who was two years older than May.
May, as she was known, attended school through 9th grade. In about 1906 May moved with her Mother, Clara, to Oakland and it was there that she met and married Howard Palmer. In 1907 when they were married in Oakland, Howard was 29 and May was 17. Both of their mothers were present at their wedding.
