William of Malmesbury recounts that King Edgar killed Ælfthryth's first husband to enable him to marry her. She was crowned Queen with her husband in 973, which was the first instance of the coronation of a Queen in England. It was alleged that she was involved in the plot to kill her stepson so her own son could succeed as king. 'Ælfthryth regina' subscribed charters of King Æthelred II between 979 and 983, and 'Ælfthryth regis mater' between 981 and 999. She became a nun at Wherwell Abbey, Hampshire in [985]. Her son King Æthelred II granted privileges to Wherwell Abbey in 1002 for the benefit of her soul. - m firstly [as his second wife,] Æthelwald Ealdorman of the East Angles, son of --- (-before 964). John moved from Berwick, ME to Brooksville. Walter H. Snow ("Brooksville, Maine..." [Downeast Graphics, 1976], p. 17: "John Grindle married first, Mary, whose maiden name and birth date are not known. She was admitted to the First Church of Berwick, August 29, 1742. His second wife was Elizabeth." Snow gives ten children: 6 by Mary, 3 by Elizabeth and one by "Dolle." Snow also gives John's military service, 1757-60.
"The Grindle Family of Hancock County, Maine" (1978), pp. 11-12: "Probably it was after Oct. 13, 1762 that John Grindle and his family settled permanently at Bagaduce since a deed of that date reveals he was a husbandman residing in 'New Township head of Berwick called Lebanon and Dorothy his wife, for f 13 sells Nathan Downes and Tristam Fall, both of Berwick all our rights in real estate of Matthew Farnam, dec'd, former husband of Dorothy, in Lebanon (Me.).' [quoting "Abstracts from Unpublished Deeds of York Co., ME" {LDS, Salt Lake City} by Dr. B. Lake Noyes, Vol. 37, York County Deeds.]
"The Grindle Family..." continues: "During the Revolution Mr. Grindle's political leanings were with the Tories, but four of his sons, Ichabod, William, Daniel and Reuben chose the side of the Patriots as did his sons-in-law, Thomas Davis, and Maj. Pelatiah Leach who all served on the side of the Americans.
"John Grindle had seen the atrocities of the Indians in the families into which he married. He had soldiered long and faithfully for King and Queen. No longer exactly a young man he had found a new life in the frontier wilderness. He was accustomed to finding his security in the trained and seasoned regulars in their red coats. He had exulted in the fall of Quebec. Now in his sixties to witness the hazardous venture of severing ties with the parent country of which his family still carried, perhaps, some fond memories? No wonder his sentiments.
"...The books in the Registry of Probate, Ellsworth, Me., contain but one item pertaining to this John Grindle. It is an appraisal of his estate made Apr. 18, 1794 by Giles Johnson, Seth Blodget and John Grindle (Vol. 1, p. 80)." Reuben administered the estate.
"Hancock County,a Rock-bound Paradise," p. 186: "The sea was Surry's lifeline. As early as 1775, John Grindle carried the mail in a boat along the shore with the letters and papers tied up in a handkerchief..."
For a detailed history of the area, see "Penobscot, Maine 1761-2011," Mark E. Honey (Bangor, ME: Snowman Printing, 2011) [distrubted by the Penobscot Historical Society]. Cf. "The Grindle Family of Hancock County, Maine," compiled by Walter A. Snow, Elizabeth C. Wescott, David C. Grindell and Almon A. Gray (1978).

[3774] http://home.wxs.nl/~voort359/home3alsac.html states: "Adalbert's wife was called Judith or Jutta, and she may or may not have been a daughter of Siegfried of Luxembourg and Hedwige of the Nordgau. If so, she and her husband were first cousins. According to other sources, Adalbert's wife was Judith of Schwaben, or even yet another Judith: of Öhningen, who is also named as the mother of Hedwige of Dagsburg, the wife of Hugues IV of Alsace, Count of the Nordgau. All of these Judiths seem to have been born around 960. I will try to find out using more sources how these people fit together. All sources that I have found so far agree that Albert and "Judith" were the parents of Gérard I, Count of Bouzonville, Count of Metz, who married Gisèle (of Metz)."
