INDEX

[15887] He tried unsuccessfully to stave off the crisis that led to the American Civil War. He was the son of prosperous Scotch-Irish Presbyterians. After graduating from Dickinson College, he studied law in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where in 1812 he was admitted to the bar and soon established a flourishing practice. An able and resourceful advocate, he moved freely in society and enjoyed the company of women, but after the early death of a fiancée who had broken with him, he remained a bachelor. Early Career - A Federalist in politics, Buchanan was twice elected to the Pennsylvania General Assembly (1814, 1815), and in 1821 he entered the U.S. Congress. Eventually joining the coalition that in 1828 elected Andrew Jackson president, he became a loyal Democrat, although he generally remained a moderate on such partisan issues as tariff and bank policies. After briefly serving (1832-33) as minister to Russia, Buchanan was elected U.S. senator from Pennsylvania. A conciliator rather than an innovator, he sought to harmonize the various factions of the Democratic party. In 1845 he became President James K. Polk's secretary of state, a position in which he again counseled moderation, particularly in connection with annexations in Mexico and Oregon. In 1852 President Franklin Pierce appointed him minister to Great Britain, a mission that kept him away from the country during the Kansas-Nebraska Act controversy. He incurred criticism by joining the U.S. ambassadors to Spain and France in signing the Ostend Manifesto (1854), which declared the U.S.'s right to take Cuba by force should efforts to purchase the slaveholding island fail. Nevertheless, two years later he won his party's nomination for the presidency. The Presidency - In 1856 Buchanan defeated John C. Frémont, a Republican, and the former president Millard Fillmore, a Whig, in their bid for the presidency. Acceptable both to Northern Democrats and Southern moderates, he ran on a platform of popular sovereignty (the right of settlers in a territory to decide whether or not to sanction slavery). Within two days of his inauguration, however, in the Dred Scott decision, of which he had prior knowledge, the U.S. Supreme Court held that the Constitution protected slavery in all territories. The president's difficulties multiplied with the depression caused by the Panic of 1857 and with his support for the admission of Kansas to the Union as a slave state. This aroused opposition in Buchanan's own party. Seeking to steer a middle course between the widely divergent philosophies of the South and North, Buchanan was unable in 1860 to prevent the breakup of his party or afterward to reunite the factions, one of which supported Vice-President John C. Breckinridge and the other Sen. Stephen A. Douglas. In the secession crisis following the victory of Republican Abraham Lincoln, Buchanan sought to gain time to allow passions to cool. Declaring that secession was illegal but that he had no power to prevent it, he attempted to preserve the peace by not provoking secessionists. Stiffening somewhat after the reorganization of his cabinet, he refused Southern demands that federal troops be ordered to abandon Fort Sumter in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina. His efforts to supply the fort failed, however, as did his plans for a constitutional convention. He left office disappointed and discredited. Well-intentioned and dignified, but a weak executive, Buchanan had the misfortune of holding office during an extremely difficult period.

[1474] Known as "The Hammer," he was Mayor of the Palace and Frankish ruler; baptised by St. Rigobert, Bishop of Reims; ruled the Franks through Clothaire IV whom he made king of the Franks in name; consolidated his power in what is now France and laid the basis for the feudal system. "The characters of Charles Martel and his grandson Charlemagne offer many striking points of resemblance. Both were men of courage and activity, and the two men are often confused in the `chansons de geste.'" {- Encycl. Brit., 1956, 5:293; cf. 9:599:} "Charles began the greatness of Austrasia...Frankish unity was re-established. He then defended Gaul against the Frisians, the Alamanni and the Bohemians. ...Charles proved himself another soldier of the cross by repelling the Moorish invasion at Poitiers (732)...." He reigned 714-741 and is buried at St. Denis. For further information, see the 2003 web site: http://www.mathematical.com/martelcharles.html and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Martel. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cousin/html/p77.htm offers: "Carolus Martellus, dux Francorum also went by the name of Charles "the Hammer." ... "Carolus, Pipini filius ex Alberda uxore, tenuit regnum Francorum annis 27." He married Chrothrudis de Trèves, daughter of Liutwin "der Heilige", Erzbischof von Trier and Willigarde von Bayern, between 715 and 725; His 1st. He was cast into prison by his mother-in-law, Plectrude, on the accession by her grandson Theodoald after 21 October 714. He associated with Chrothais , a concubine between 715 and 720. He excaped from prison and put himself head of the national party of Austrasia before 716. He surprised and defeated the Neustrians in 716 in Amblève near Malmédy. He was defeated by the Frisian King, Radbod, in 716 in Cologne, Austrasia. Annals of Monte Fernando 717: "Karolus filius Pipini fit dominus." Duke of Franks between 717 and 741. He defeated the Neustrians a second time, and pursuing the Neustrians as far as Paris, on 21 March 717 or 28 May 717 in Vincy, near Cambrai. He forced Plectrude to surrender her power and restore to him the wealth of his father before 718 in Cologne, Austrasia. He proclaimed Chlotaire IV as King of Austrasia while reserving the title Mayor of the Palace for himself in 718. He attacked the Saxons who had invaded Austrasia and laid to waste their country to the banks of the river Weser after 718. Mayor of the Palace in Frankish Kingdoms, between 718 and 741. He defeated the combined army of the Neustrians and their allies the Aquitainians before 719 in Soissons. He proclaimed Chilperic II as King of all the Franks on the death of Chilperic's brother Chlotair IV in 719. In this action his authority was endorsed by the Neustrians and Aquitainians. He seized Western Friesland, on the death of their Duke Radbod, without any great resistance on the part of the Frisians, who had taken possession of it on the death of Pepin in 719. He launched a second expedition against the Saxons in 720. He proclaimed Theuderic IV, still a minor, as King of all the Franks in 720. Duke of the Franks between 721 and 741. He accorded St. Boniface (Winfrid), the great apostle of Germany, protection in 723. This protection was all the more salutary as the saint himself explained to his old friend, Daniel of Winchester, that without it he could neither administer his church, defend his clergy, nor prevent idolatry. "Hence Charles Martel shares, to a certain degree, the glory and merit of Boniface's great work of civilization." He brought to submission Raginfrid of Neustria in Angers, restoring the Frankish Monarchy as it had been under his father Pepin, in 724. He entered Bavaria against the ever more independent Agilolfing dukes in 725. He associated with Sunnichild von Bayern, daughter of Herzog von Bayern Tassilo II von Bayern and theAbbess of Nonnberg, Imma of Alemania, in 725 in Bavaria; His 2nd. "He also brought thence the Princess Suanehilde, who seems to have become his mistress. " He reentered Bavaria and restored Frankish suzerainty in 728. He marched against the Alemanni under "King Lantfrid" and thereby subjugating Southern Germany in 730. He was disappointed with Eudes of Aquitaine for comprimising with the Moslems, but did move south to attack the Moors in Aquitaine in 731. He defeated the Saracens and stopped the Moslem conquest of Europe at Tours in October 732 in the area outside of Tours. This battle (the Battle of Poitiers) has proven to be one of the most decisive battles in history. As of after October 732, also called Charles "The Hammer" He was given this name following the Battle of Poitiers for the way he had mercilessly slain the moslem army advancing into Europe. He began a series of campaigns to force Burgundy to yield to his rule in 733. He put down a rebellion by the Frisian Duke, Bobo, who was slain in battle, between 733 and 734. This time the Frisians were completely subdued and adopted Christianity. He entered Aquitaine, quelled the revolt of Hatto and Hunold, sons of the deceased duke Eudes in 735. A year later he left the duchy to Hunold, to be held in fief. He heard of Eudes' death and marched rapidly across the Loire River in order to make his power felt around Bordeaux in 735. He assumed full authority of the Franks on the death of the Merovingian Theodoric IV in 737. So great had his power grown that he did so without legal right. He banished the Moslems from Arles and Avignon, and defeated their army on the River Berre near Narbonne before 739. He surpressed a rebellion in Provence led by Maurontus in 739. He was had completely subdued the petty rulers of Burgundy in 739. He also continued fending off Muslim attacks into Gaul. He left a will before 21 October 741; Provided for the division of the Frankish Empire between his sons Pepin (Neustria, Burgundy, and Provence) and Carloman (Austrasia, Alamannia, and Thuringia). Aquitaine and Burgundy were left to their own devices. He died on 22 October 741 in Quierzy-sur-Oise, France. He was the eponymous ancestor of the Carolingian Dynasty."
