[22609] http://www.ancestrees.com/pedigree/9583.htm offers in 2003: "He inherited his father's lands at Shawbury without a licence and was pardoned for this on Jun 20 1343. He was again pardoned for not showing up at the Feast of St. Lawrence where he was to have taken up Knighthood. He was in the King's service in Flanders in 1346 but returned in January of that year (46/47) due to severe illness. On Dec. 1, 1352 he received an exemption for life from being appointed mayor, sheriff, escheator against his will." [See the reference in notes for his wife.]

[55596] "The Bangor Dail News [Bangor, Maine]," 12 March 2020: "Cherryfield - C. Foster Mathews of Cherryfield, died unexpectedly on March 9th, 2020. Foster was born on October 18th, 1938 in Winter Harbor, the son of James and Bernice (Harrington) Mathews. When he was two, they moved to Cherryfield where he resided for the rest of his life. Foster graduated from Cherryfield Academy in 1956, valedictorian of his class. Directly following high school, he served 4 years in the U.S. Air Force as a Korean linguist. Returning home, he worked two years at C.H.Mathews store before being offered a teller position at Union Trust Bank in 1963, the same year he married Leta Nelson. He quickly became manager at the bank, eventually overseeing both the Cherryfield and Milbridge branches. He worked for Union Trust for 36 years, retiring in 2000. Foster also assisted both Doug Campbell and Willard Kelley as a funeral attendant and filled in as a substitute teacher as time allowed. As an active community member in Cherryfield, Foster helped launch the Boy Scout Troop 139 and mentored scouts to reach Eagle status. He was a deacon at the First Congregational Church of Cherryfield, occasionally giving a Sunday sermon when the minister was away. He was a past master, secretary and treasurer for the Narraguagus Masonic Lodge #88. He was also past president of the Cherryfield Alumni Association. Foster served on the boards of The Sea Coast Mission and The Lamb House, as well as various other boards and committees. He was directly involved with the Clarence Tucker Children's Fund and the Phil Harriman scholarship fund at Narraguagus High School. There are so many amazing things that could be said about Foster. It is hard to know where to start, for how does one describe a man that truly encompassed all that is good in the world. He was a loving and devoted husband to Leta and father to Amy and Katie, always involved and always there. He was a proud grandfather of Emma, the light of his life, where the mere mention of her name brought a smile to his face. He was faithful and true to his parents, siblings, other family members, in-laws, as well as to the countless friends he made along the way. Forever kind, respectful and a true gentleman, Foster unknowingly changed many lives though his genuine concern and keen observations. He was able to see a need when others didn't and took actions that lifted people up and warmed their hearts. Beyond being known for his generous spirit and humor, Foster was famous for his peanut butter fudge and biscuits. Anyone who had the good fortune to try either, always clamored for more. He was a paramour of poetry, able to recite numerous works without hesitation and enjoyed reading in general. The written word inspired him and he often used those words to inspire others. Foster, simply put, was a remarkable man whose memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Foster is survived by his wife of 56 years, Leta (Nelson) Mathews, his daughter Amy Mathews, his daughter Katie Mathews-Parker, granddaughter Emma and son-in-law, Donny Parker, his sister, Gloria Bagley, his brother, Dickie Mathews , his aunt Grace Gerrish, his niece, Kelley Wescott and many other in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. Special mention to his North Street Café friends: Burleigh Ames, Louie Santerre, Harold Stoddard, Leon Thompson and Monty Caler. He was pre-deceased by his parents, James and Bernice, sister, Lucille MacQuarrie, nephew, Rodney Morse and niece, Karen (Mathews) Henry."
