[1659] Called "The Unraed" (i.e. without rede or counsel); tried to buy off Danish invaders led by Sweyn; finally assembled large navy but internal dissent undermined effective deployment; Encycl. Britannica, 1956 Ed. (1:275) states: "Weak, self-indulgent, improvident, he had pursued a policy of opportunism to a fatal conclusion." He reigned 979-1016. See http://www.thepeerage.com/p5109.htm and http://www.earlybritishkingdoms.com/adversaries/bios/aethelredunred.html. http://www.mun.ca/mst/heroicage/issues/5/Shippey2.html states "Æthelred II ("the Unready") married daughters to Eadric of Mercia, Uhtred of Bamborough, and Ulfketel of East Anglia, possibly to shore up uncertain loyalty." For a description of his interaction with the Danish invaders, see "The Last Apocalypse: Europe at the Year 1000," James Reston, Jr. (New York: Doubleday, 1998), Chapter 4 ("Svein Forkbeard verus Ethelred the Unready"). Also see "English and Norse Documents Relating to the Reign of Ethelred the Unready," Margaret Ashdown, ed. (New York: Russell & Russell), 1972 and "The Forge of Christendom: The End of Days and the Epic Rise of the West," Tom Holland (Little, Brown, 2008). Also see the highly readable and delightfully written "Saxons vs. Vikings: Alfred the Great and England in the Dark Ages," Ed West (New York, NY: Skyhorse Publishing, 1977; ISBN: 9781510719903).
[30599] James Pulver offers on the Web: "Arrived in Gloucester, Essex, Co., MA in 1636. He was constable there for a while. He was a husbandman. He, along with his neighbors Andrew Allen and Joseph Russell, were members of the Scotch Charitable Association (first called the St. Andrews Society, formed in Boston, MA, by 1656). This was a underground for Scots to be returned to Scotland. During the Cromwellian era in England, war prisoners and political captives were sentenced to penal servitude in the Colonies, usually Virginia and the Carolinas. Like the African slaves, these individuals would try to escape north by the 'underground railroad', much like the system used during the Civil War 200 years later. These victims of Cromwell's expeditions would walk north to Boston in order to get passage home. Andrew Foster was not made a freeman until 19 May 1669 in Andover, Essex Co., MA. This fact he was not made a freeman until he was nearly 90 years of age probably indicates he was not a member of the Congregational Church, but was most likely a Scots Presbyterian. He was one of the first settlers of Andover, coming there in 1640, actually 6 years before the village was established. He had received 12 grants of land, most of them in the extreme southerly corner of town, near Willington and Foster's Pond, Essex Co., MA." - From: "History and Genealogy of the Thomas Stone Family" by Earl H. Antes 1991. See also the unverified Musgrove-Lowe Family Tree in Ancestry.com in 2014 which proposes that Andrew is son of Andrew Foster (b. 1552) and Margery Elliott)(b. 1556).

Meribah m. (int.) 20 Nov 1742 Major William Eaton - progenitors of the Penobscot, ME Eaton family - see "Penobscot Pioneers," Philip Howard Gray (Camden: Penobscot Press, 1994), pp. 1, 109. Grace Limeburner, "The Folks of Majorbigwaduce" (typescript at Bangor Library, p. 413), reports that Meribah is daughter by an Indian chief, conceived during Ruth's capitivity in Canada. However, the following note was received by email 27 Oct 1998: "After considerable research I believe that it is highly unlikely that Meribah Wardwell who married William Eaton [int] 20 Nov 1742 was the daughter of an Indian. For further information see my article in Volume 55 of The American Genealogist." - Edward F Holden, Genealogist, NH State Library. Meribah and William Eaton had six children.
"A Historical Sketch of the Town of Deer Isle," by George L. Hosmer (at http://www.answers.com/topic/a-historical-sketch-of-the-town-of-deer-isle in 2006) offers: "William Eaton was the first man who made a permanent settlement here, and it was said to be in 1762. I have judged that his native place might have been Haverhill, Massachusetts, or that vicinity, as he was a cousin to Theophilus and Jonathan Eaton, who were born there, and he was about the age of the first named. He was married in York, Maine, to a member of the family of Mr. Eliakim Wardwell, of that place, in 1742. I have been told that her maiden name was Ruth, but the records of that town show that the marriage was between Mr. William Eaton and Miss Meribah Wardwell. There is a tradition that before her birth her mother was taken captive by the Indians, and while in captivity she was compelled to become the wife of one of the chiefs, and that Mrs. Eaton was the fruit of their union. Some of her descendants seem to show the probability of such an origin. Her husband was described to me by one of his granddaughters as a man of a light complexion. My informant was born in 1776, and well remembered him. On the return of peace between the tribe by which she was held in captivity and the white people, Miss Wardwell was delivered up to her husband with her child. She afterward had children, the youngest of whom, Mr. Daniel Wardwell, settled in the town of Penobscot, where he died in 1803. He was the father of Colonel Jeremiah Wardwell, a man of note there, who died in 1825. A sister of Mrs. Eaton was the mother of Captain Joseph Perkins, one of the settlers in Castine, and he was there in 1779, when the British took possession of the place. He was one of the most prominent men of that town till his death in 1818, and was, with Colonel Wardwell, one of the first board of . selectmen in the town of Penobscot, in 1787. The father of Eliakim Wardwell was Mr. Samuel Wardwell, who suffered death during the delusion of witchcraft, and was a resident of Andover, Massachusetts. His father was the first of the family who came from England, and his name was Thomas Wardwell. Mr. Eaton, or, as he was called, Major Eaton, settled on what is now the Scott farm, near the steamboat landing. He resided there several years, when he sold out his possession to Mr. Nathaniel Scott, of what was then the town of Ward, now Auburn, in the county of Worcester, Massachusetts. He was the ancestor of all of that name here. His son, Mr. John Scott, occupied the farm after him. A daughter, Martha Scott, was the wife of Mr. Asa Green, who came here from Worcester County, who will be noticed hereafter. After the sale of his right to Mr. Scott, Major Eaton moved to Little Deer Island, where he occupied the farm that was owned by Mr. Peter Hardy, Jr., at the time of his death in 1859. What time he moved there, I never knew, nor do I know the time of his death. His farm there, after his death, passed into the possession of Mr. Benjamin Weed, his son-in-law. Major Eaton left four sons and two daughters: one, Eliakim, settled on Little Deer Island and died there; Jeremiah, who settled on the farm since owned and occupied by the late Captain Amos Howard and now by his widow; William, who settled on the lot now owned and occupied by Mr. William E. Powers and Mr. Francis M. Holden: he died not far from the year 1841; and Samuel, whose descendants live in the town of Brooklin. His daughters were the wives of Mr. Jonathan Torrey and Mr. Benjamin Weed."
