[48991] Joseph's grave marker states "SP3 U. S. Army". "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 18 June 2001, p. 13: "Winter Harbor - Joseph M. Gerrish, 69, died unexpectedly June 16, 2001, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Oct. 7, 1931, at Ellsworth, the son of Alton and Mary (Pendleton) Gerrish. While serving in the Army, he was stationed in Alaska, where he enjoyed moose and caribou hunting. He was a member of the Winter Harbor Lodge No. 1 92 AF & AM and several other Masonic bodies. He had served his community as a selectman and a school board member. He was a carpenter and a boat builder. Since recovering from heart surgery in December, he had built seven punts for local fishermen and a total of more than 73 punts as well as several other boats during his boat building career. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Grace (Harrington) Gerrish of Winter Harbor; his mother, Mary of Ellsworth; five children, Richard of Winter Harbor, Margie of Clifton, Thomas, Michael and Catherine, all Winter Harbor; one sister, Janet Buffett of Winter Harbor; seven grandchildren and one great granddaughter, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one son, Russell in 1981; and a grandson, Kevin in 1987."
[5627] In 2003 http://84.1911encyclopedia.org/K/KE/KENT_KINGDOM_.htm reports: "Under the West Saxon dynasty Kent, together with Essex, Sussex and Surrey, was sometimes given as a dependent kingdom to one of the royal family. During Ecgbert's reign it was entrusted to his son Aethelwulf, on whose accession to the throne of Wessex, in 839, it was given to Aethelstan, probably his son, who lived at least till 851. From 855 to 860 it was governed by Aethelberht son of Aethelwulf. During the last years of Alfred's reign it seems to have been entrusted by him to his son Edward. Throughout the 9th century we hear also of two earls, whose spheres of authority may have corresponded to those of the two kings whom we find in the 8th century. The last earls of whom we have any record were the two brothers Sigehelm and Sigewulf, who fell at the Holm in 905 when the Kentish army was cut off by the Danes, on Edward the Elder's return from his expedition into East Anglia. At a later period Kent appears to have been held, together with Sussex, by a single earl." Also see Weis, Frederick Lewis. Ancestral Roots of Sixty Colonists Who Came to New England Between 1623 and 1650. Fifth Edition. (Baltimore, Maryland: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1982).
