[57132] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 4 May 2022: "Bucksport - Esther Louise Bowden passed away on April 30, 2022, following a recent decline in health, with family by her side. Over the past 20 years she had endured several cancer surgeries and treatments; always with a positive acceptance and the determination to enjoy life and remaining independent up until this past winter. Esther was born on July 14, 1935, in Harrington, Maine, daughter of Teresa and George Ames. At age 6, they moved to Bucksport, Maine, where she resided for the remainder of her life. Esther was a proud graduate of Bucksport High School, class of 1953. Her classmates remained special life-long friends. In July of that year, she married Eugene W. Bowden. For 58 years they raised a family and shared many special memories until his passing in 2011. Esther's primary focus was her family. She was a very devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and aunt. Esther was an expert seamstress making beautiful clothing and quilts. In the later years when smaller projects were easier to manage, she created everything from Christmas tree skirts to tooth fairy pillows. She was an excellent cook and looked forward to all the frequent family gatherings when she would cook entire meals or more recently cooking at least one item to be able to contribute. Esther was an active volunteer for school events and fundraising for her children and grandchildren, and along with Eugene, attended many of their grandchildren's sporting events. Esther and Eugene spent many years camping, initially in Maine and New Hampshire and through the Maritime Provinces of Canada. They soon discovered their love of Prince Edward Island and would camp at Twin Shores Camping Area in Darnley for the next 40 years; eventually considering this more of a summer home when Eugene retired. Esther continued to spend time there as her children supported her camping outings for 10 more years after Eugene passed away. Their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren cherish many fond memories of the time spent together there as a family. Eugene and Esther shared their love of The Island with friends becoming part of the family. Esther was loved and will be missed by her surviving children - Stephen Bowden and wife, Juanita, Mark Bowden and wife, Delores, Craig Bowden and wife, Corinne, and Jeanna Bjorn; grandchildren - Jamie and wife, Amie, Shane and wife, Ja'Nette, Trevor and wife, Chloe, Jared and wife, Krystle, Brittany and husband, Reno, Jack and wife, Liz, Clark and girlfriend, Sydney, Greg and girlfriend, Brittany, Chris and wife Lindsey, and Tyler; great-grandchildren - Paige, Peyton, Maisie, Alyx, Sadie, Jaden, Brenna, Ethan, Beckett, Gryffin, Aiden, Chancze, Greyson, Karson, Blair, Barron; brothers - Russell Ames and wife, Kathy; Robert Ames and wife, Lorre; sister-in-law, Doris Bowden; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Eugene, Esther was predeceased by their infant son, Timothy; sister, Marguerite; brother, Arlo and Eugene's siblings - Wilfred Bowden, Leslie Bowden, Marguerite Eckert, and her husband, Philip."

Irene is daughter of Warren James Smith (1874-1940) & Nellie Louise Robinson (1883-1975; m. 8 September 1904 in Southwest Harbor, Hancock Co.. ME). "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 7 October 1995, p. 23: "Southwest Harbor - Irene Louise Closson, 90, died Oct. 6, 1995 at a local hospital. Irene was born Feb. 20, 1905 in Sorrento, the daughter of Warren and Nellie (Robinson) Smith. Irene lived a normal childhood for those days. The family moved to Sullivan and she endured the trails of walking great distances to school and finally graduating from Cherryfield Academy in 1923. After graduation, her heart was taken by a young 23 year old man, one Maynard Closson of Bernard. They were soon married and Irene moved to start her newly married life in Bernard. In 1925 a son, Lawrence Maynard Closson, was born and then again four years later another son, Stanley Edward Closson, was brought into the world. During her working career, besides the job of raising her family, she was a sardine packer at William Underwood Factory in McKinley, a laundry room/chambermaid at Clairmont Hotel in Southwest Harbor, and during World War II she worked on raw steel, outdoors, winter and summer, at the South Portland Shipyard helping to build Liberty Ships. At the end of the war they moved back to Southwest Harbor where she worked as a nurses aide at the Bar Harbor Hospital and Bangor Mental Health Hospital. She also worked as a cook for several summer families through the years. Wanting a change in her life, she opened a lunch room adjacent to the William Underwood Sardine Factory in Bass Harbor. Later she sold the business and opened another lunch room at the Head of the Harbor Town Dock in Southwest Harbor, and ran it with her mother. Again business grew so that they could not handle it, so she sold the business. At this time, living in Bernard Lottie Norwood's General Store was for sale, so she bought that and operated the store for several years. While there her husband, Maynard, passed away. Unable to cope with running and maintaining the home, she sold and moved to one of the first apartments opened at the Ridge Apartments in Southwest Harbor, where she lived until her death. Her major loves were, bingo yard, sales and her coon cat and she kept busy at those. The passing of the years, loss of most of her sight, and numerous medical problems have resulted in her sitting at home, watching television and enjoying numerous visitors and visits from her very expanded family. Irene had the unusual honor of being at the head of six separate fifth-generation families. A surprising part of all this is that all of her children and their offspring live within a thirty mile radius of her and she saw them on a regular basis. Irene is survived by her two sons, Lawrence Closson of Bernard and Stanley Closson of Southwest Harbor and West Palm Beach; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren."
