Donald Eustis Dyer Jr., 79, died June 26, 2015, with his loving family at his side at his home in Bar Harbor. He was born July 14, 1935, in Hulls Cove, the son of Donald E. and Margaret Harriman Dyer. Don graduated from Bar Harbor High School in 1953 and the same year began Bowdoin College in Brunswick. Two years later, on June 12, 1955, Don married his high school sweetheart, Marion L. Moon. He graduated in 1957 with a BA in political science and commissioning as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. For the next 20 years, Don, Marion and family traveled the country and the world, including overseas assignments in Germany and Okinawa, Japan. In 1970, he completed his masters degree in public administration at the University of Rhode Island. Don was a Vietnam War veteran, serving two terms of duty, one in 1967-68 and the other in 1970-71. After his last assignment at Fort Bragg, N.C., he retired from active duty in 1978 and returned home to Bar Harbor. Don received many commendations during his military career, including the Legion of Merit. Marion and Don had two children, Donald and Donna. Donald is a professor of Russian and linguistics and chair of the Department of Modern Languages at the University of Mississippi. Donna is a physical therapist who resides in Fayetteville, N.C. Don was a member of the George Kirk American Legion Post No. 25 in Bar Harbor and for over 50 years was a member of the Bar Harbor Congregational Church, UCC. Don is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Marion; son, Dr. Donald L. Dyer, and wife, Helen, of Oxford, Miss.; daughter, Donna D. Staples, and husband, John, of Fayetteville, N.C.; three grandchildren, Erin Dyer, Nick Staples and Tony Staples and wife, Kristyn; great-granddaughter, Amelia Staples; brother, LeRoy Dyer, and wife, Joan, of Middleton, Conn.; sister, Deborah Dyer, of Bar Harbor; aunt, Florence Ames, of Bar Harbor; and many nieces, nephews and cousins."
