[58903] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 28 February 2025: "Cynthia 'Cyndy' McCoy Fairweather, 92, of Penobscot, formerly of Fairfield, passed away peacefully at home on February 20, 2025. Cynthia was born in Bucksport, on October 16, 1932, the daughter of the late Edwin Henry and Dorothy Paul McCoy. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert S. Fairweather; and her brother, Edwin H. McCoy Jr. After graduating from Bucksport High School in 1951, Cynthia attended Lasell College in Massachusetts. She began her career as an executive secretary at Eastern Fine Paper in Brewer, where she fondly enjoyed playing cribbage during lunch breaks. As a dedicated mother of four, she later worked as the secretary for the superintendent of SAD 49. Always committed to learning, Cynthia graduated from the University of Maine with honors and pursued her passion for education as an elementary school teacher in the same community, focusing on reading and the arts. She maintained lifelong connections with many of her former students, which brought her great joy. Music was a constant in Cynthia's life. She possessed a beautiful soprano voice and sang in her church choir for over 70 years. She was also a founding member of the R.B. Hall Community Band, playing the saxophone from 1962 until 2019. Upon retirement, she became a 'snowbird,' traveling to her condominium in Gulfport, FL, each winter. Her love for travel took her to Europe, Canada, and across the eastern United States. Cynthia was an avid reader, continuing to read the newspaper days before her passing. She was known for her thoughtful support of friends and family, often bringing a homemade treat or small gift during visits. Cyndy was married to the love of her life, Bob, for 58 years. Together, they raised four children, Susan Gilman of Camden, Robert and Jackie Fairweather of Penobscot, Patricia and M. Stanley Buchanan of So. Casco, and Mary Fairweather of Penobscot. She is survived by eight grandchildren, Kenneth Peterson, Mary Burgess, Heather Weber, Stuart Fairweather, Chris Fairweather, Ariele Battipaglia, Melissa Nadeau, and Beth Pesula/Tanguay. Cynthia also leaves behind 14 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Cynthia will be laid to rest beside her husband this summer in Castine. Her family takes great comfort in knowing that the legacy of her love of music and teaching will live on through all those who knew Cyndy."

[494] Thomas and William are prominent names in the lineage given in Burke's "Landed Gentry" (p.641) which begins with Robert Wydecombe of Martock, Somerset, M.P. for Shrewsbury in 1420-21 and 1433, m. Benedicta _____, and had as second son THOMAS Whitcombe (m. Edith, dau. & sole heir of Adam Maveysin of Berwick Mavesyn, Salop -- Thomas and Edith had Thomas, living in 1484, m. Elizabeth ______ and had Thomas who was a Freeman of Shrewsbury in 1493, m. Isabel [dau. of Thomas Poyner] and had William of Berwick Mavesyn [m. Blanche, dau. of Roger Best of Atcham, Salop] whose will is dated 1587...). For ancestors and descendants of Thomas see: Whitcomb Genealogy which states that the first recorded ancestors of this line are Thomas Whitcomb and wife Edith Mavisyn who were b. ca. 1399 (shown as grandparents of Thomas). The Genealogy and Burke's are in apparent disagreement on the line. There is confusion between the names Wydecombe and Witcomb(e). See also http://members.aol.com/lwhitcomb/ljwanc/d0/i0001993.htm#i1993 in 2003 and http://www.memorychest.com/whitcombline/htmg01.htm in 2005. The surname Wydecombe/Widecombe means "wide valley." The surname Whitcombe means "where the withies grow" - withies are a weed used in basket making. In 2003 http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/1094/whitcomb.htm offers another explanation: "The name Whitcomb means "white valley" and originated in the southwestern part of England where cliffs and valleys of white chalk were plentiful. It has been spelled a number of ways including, Whitcombe, Whetcombe, Whiticomb and Whitcom." Ancestry.com offers another suggestion: "Whitcomb Name Meaning - English: habitational name from any of various places called Whitcombe or Witcombe. Whitcombe in Dorset and Witcombe in Gloucestershire are named with Old English wid wide + cumb valley; Whitcombe, Isle of Wight, may have the same etymology or alternatively the first element may be Old English hwit white. Witcombe in Somerset is named with Old English wiðig willow + cumb."
