[12170] Sir John, of Southwick, Northamptonshire, was Chief Justice of the King's Bench and Lord Chancellor of England.
Mrs. Byrd Miles (p. 3), referenced under Humphrey Kynaston, gives his name as Sir Roger Kynaston and reports he is "the fourth son of Griffin Kynaston of Stokes. He was the founder of the Hardley Branch of the Kynaston family. 'He lived in a busy period, fitted to exotte [sic] the energies of his natures; all his attachments to the cause - - of the legitimate monarchy.' He married first Elizabeth, daughter of Lord Cobham of Sterbough, by whom he had his eldest son. He married second Elizabeth, sister of Richard Gray, Lord Powis, by whom his other children were born. His wives were both of high rank, and 'in consequence of these connections, joined to his personal valour, he afforded powerful aid to the house of York (in the War of the Roses) and also to the victory of Blore Heath on Sept. 23, 1459, which enabled the Earl of Salisbury to join the Duke of York near Ludlow.' At this Battle he personally vanquished and slew Lord Audley, the Lancastrian General, and took his arms, ermine, a chevon gules. 'At the subsequent Field of Ludlow where the Duke had gathered a puisuant armie, Roger Kynaston, Esquire appeared in arms against the King, and though he was of course included in the subsequent attainer of King Henry's Parliament, yet so great was his popularity with the House of Commons, that he with Walter Hopton of Hopton Castle, and three others, was at especial prayer of the House, dismissed upon payment of a fine.' He was appointed Sheriff of Shropshire in 1462 and again in 1470 in which year he was knighted by King Henry VI. Later he was commissioned Constable of Middle Knockin Castles. In 1488 he received a grant of the office of Constable of Harleck and soon afterwards was appointed Sheriff and Escheator of Merioneth County in Wales for life. He died 1495/96."
https://www.houseofnames.com/kenniston-family-crest offers: "The forbears of the name Kenniston once lived in or near some now-lost place called Kynaston, which experts agree was probably in the English border county of Shropshire. The surname Kenniston belongs to the category of habitation names, which are derived from pre-existing names for towns, villages, parishes, or farmsteads.
Early Origins of the Kenniston family
The surname Kenniston was first found in Shropshire, where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor of Kinnerly, some say before the Norman Conquest of England by Duke William of Normandy in 1066. Conjecturally they are descended from the Princes of Powys in Wales, through Griffith, son of Joerweth Goch, Lord of Mochnan, younger son of Meredith, Prince of Powis who took refuge in Shropshire. King Henry III of England gave him lands in that county. He married Matilda, the heiress of Ralph le Strange by whom he acquired the Manor of Kinnerly. Griffith' son, Griffith Vychan settled at Tre-gynvarth, which, when anglicized, is Kynvarth's Town, which, when spoken, became slurred into Kynastown, or Kynaston.
