[10101] "The Akron Beacon Journal [Akron, Ohio], 4 May 1967," p. 85: "Bath Twp. - Bessie Hawkins will come home to her beloved Bath Twp. for the last time Friday. Services for the long-time leader in school, community and Republican activities will be at 1 p. m. Friday at the Billow Chapel in Cuyahoga Falls. Then the funeral procession will go across the Yellow Creek valley she cherished to her final resting place in Bath Cemetery. Mrs. Hawkins, 77, died Wednesday in Akron General Hospital. Stricken with a mild heart attack three weeks ago, she chose to remain in her antique-laden, 14-room house at 3240 Yellow Creek rd. Retiring from public life four years ago, she said, 'I can't think of a nicer place in the world to live out one's last years than in the Ghent valley.' Reluctantly, she left her Echo Hills farmhouse and her faithful terrier, Little Bit, Tuesday for tests at the hospital. By morning her heart wore out. Bessie, as everyone knew her, was a big woman with a big heart. She used heart and head to help a lot of people. She chalked up an impressive list of accomplishments, but never forgot to appreciate ordinary things others often overlooked. Bessie loved to garden and encouraged others. She was a member of Bath Alpha Garden Club. When Bath boosters were hunting a slogan for community signs, someone suggested. 'Make Bath Beautiful.' Bessie erupted, 'Bath is already beautiful. You don't have to make it so, just keep it that way!' The signs still read 'Keep Bath Beautiful.' Bessie, a country girl at heart, was no stranger to the city. Her father, Jared Barker, was the first sheriff to use the Summit County Jail which was torn down to make way for the City-County Safety Building. The faces of Bessie and her sister, Sarah, were carved in the stone pillars that supported the porch. Later Bessie was a familiar figure in the County Courthouse. She was jury commissioner for Common Pleas Court from 1931 to 1961. Her infectious smile, ready laugh and witty comments made her a favorite. She served the County Board of Education on two occasions. She quit in 1957 after 12 years in which she attended 141 of the 143 meetings. She was called out of retirement in 1960 to fill the term of Mrs. Olive Ocasek, who had died. She held the board presidency several times. Bessie was Republican women's chairman for Summit County at one time and was active in party organizations. She was president of Bath School PTA and helped organize and was the first president of the Summit County Council of Parents and Teachers. She helped organize and was first president of the Fairlawn Civic Club which kept together a group of women who became friends while sewing for servicemen during World War I. Bessie, born in Bath, where her father and uncle owned 640 acres, moved to Akron when she married Harry J. Hawkins in 1910. They came to the Ghent area of Bath 16 years later. Mr. Hawkins died in 1961. The couple had lost an only son, Jerald, in 1942. Bessie leaves a grandson, her sister and next-door neighbor, Mrs. William Schwinn, two nieces and a lot of merry memories for those who knew her."
