"Sonny" also m. in 1972 in Augusta, ME Vivian Blair (b. 29 Jan 1930 in Augusta, ME) - they had no children. "Bangor Daily News [Banor, Maaine]," 20 May 2002: "Penobscot - Alton S. 'Sonny' Farnham, 75, died May 17, 2002, at his home. He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of Hollis and Edith (Vatcher) Farnham. He served in the U.S. Navy, was a member of the Rising Star Lodge No. 177 AF & AM, Penobscot, and the Eagles Club Aerie No. 3177, Brewer. Sonny worked at the St. Regis Paper Co., Bucksport, retiring after 32 years of service. After retiring from the mill, he owned and operated Farnham's Power Equipment in Penobscot. He loved to work in the woods, woodcutting and running the 'Farnham Family' saw mill. He took great pride in his lawn, keeping it near perfect. He was an animal lover, was an avid motorcyclist, loved boating and the water. Sonny was an accomplished and well known pianist, playing many local establishments and private parties. Sonny is survived by his wife, Vivian (Blair) Farnham of Penobscot; daughter, Rosemary Begley of Castine; stepson, David McGlauflin and wife, Milette of South Carolina; daughter-in-law, Sally Farnham of Bucksport; grandchildren, James Begley of South Portland, Matthew Farnham of South Carolina, Michael Farnham of Florida; stepgrandchildren, Gwendalyn McGlauflin of Florida, Maricel McGlauflin, Anthony Chase McGlauflin, Christian Darin McGlauflin, all of South Carolina; siblings, Beverly Henry and husband, Ed of Florida, Barbara Willis and husband, Carleton of Castine, Dennis Farnham and wife, Ruth of Penobscot; brother-in-law, Phil Harman of Penobscot; several nieces, nephews, cousins; many special friends. Sonny was predeceased by son, Stephen Farnham; stepson, Anthony McGlauflin; sister, Rachel Harman. Visitation for family and friends will be 6-8 p.m. Monday, at the Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St. Bucksport, where funeral services will be held 12 p.m. Tuesday, with Pastor Peter Remick officiating. Interment will be in Kling Cemetery, Augusta."

Wilts. The name of Mayhew and the Vineyard are almost synonymous, and it will be interesting as well as instructive to learn something of the family which exercised such a sway over the early destinies of our island. As an English family name it is most frequently met with in the South and West of this island, and few parish registers in the Counties of Hereford, Gloucester, Wilts and Dorset can be opened without presenting us with examples. It is spelt in many ways, varying from the extended form of Mayhowe to that of Mao, and often, as it will frequently appear, clipped down and reduced to May to the loss of its concluding syllable. An early occurrence of the name, and in its extended form, is found in Glover's Roll of Arms, supposed by Sir Harris Nicholas to date from between 1245 and 1250. Herbert le Fitz Mayhewe is there mentioned as bearing "party d'azur & de goulz one trois leonseaux rampant d'or," and Woodward in his History of Wales, page 415, narrates that account to the old copy of S. Davids Annals. The Welsh slew Sir Herbert Fitz-Mahu apparently in 1246, near the castle of Morgan Cam. The same Roll of Armas gives the clue to the origin of the name as a Christian name; in the case of Mahewe de Lovayne, Mayhew de Columbers and Maheu de Redmain. There can be little doubt that it is here a softened form of Matthew. Bardsley in his "English Surnames" mentioned two other instances, Adam fil. Maheu, and Mayhew de Basingbourne, from the Parliamentary Writs. Lower, (Patronymica Brittannica, 219, 221) takes the same view. In 1733 his heirs made claim to his share of Narragansett #5, Bedford, N.H. (Bodge, Soldiers in King Philip's War, 430). He was a master mariner with the Naval Service and had a brush with piracy near the Brewster Islands, described in Prince Family, 70. Soon after 1700 the family removed to Boston."
