[20909] "The Perry County Times [New Bloomfield, Pennsylvaia], 23 November 1916," p. 1: "Blain, Nov. 21 - - Sunday afernoon this commnnlty was greatly shocked to learn of the sudden death of George M. Stroup, a highly esteemed and well known citizen, whose life was cut off suddenly while at the home of Russell J. Martin, in Madison township, at about 2:30 o'clock, That morning he and Mrs. Stroup attended Sunday school and church services at the Lutheran church at this place and he appeared in his usual health. His death resulted from acute dilation of the heart. He had been ailing with heart trouble for several years. He was seized fatally while seated on a chair and in conversation with those about him. His wife and those near him noticed something wrong and they quicKly took him to the door for air but life was extinct in a few moments time. His head dropped forward and he did not speak after he was stricken. A Physician was summoned but found the body lifeless. Mr. Stroup has resided all his life at his fine country home, one mile and a half east of the town on the road leading to New Bloomfield and of late years has made almost daily trips to town driving his bay horse to get mail as the delivery does not pass his residence. He will be missed in many walks of life being one of our most prominent citizens, often called on for advice and counsel. He has been administrator and executor of quite a number of estates and had always filed his accounts agreeably to all parties concerned. He acted as settling up clerk at many public sales, his services being sought. He served as assessor of Jackson township for quite a number of years past with fidelity and in his good judgment with fairness to all taxpayers. George Stroup was a son ot the late George and Arabella (Stambaugh) Stroup and was one of a family of six children. Born May 17, 1846, died November 19, 1916, he was aged 70 years, 6 months and 2 days. The following two sisters and one, brother survive the deceased: Mrs. William B. Endslow, of Spokane, Washington; Mrs. Scott Hench, Underclift, Col , and John Stroup, of Loysville. Two sisters, Anna and Margaret, died in infancy. Mr. Stoup was joined in wedlock to Miss Mary Martin Nov. 30, 1871, by Rev. Samuel E. Herring, Reformed minister, at her old home in Madison township, and where Mr. Stroup's death occured. By their union six children were born, namely: Anna Bertha, wife of Dr H. W. Woods, of Blain; Margaret Alice Stroup, died July 29, 1910, at the age of 34 years, who was the wife of W. T. Morrow, of Swissvale, Pa ; Robert Martin Stroup, of Gap, North Dakota; Charles Ed Stroup, of Billings, Montana; Franklin Neff Stroup, of Palmyra, N. Y., and Laura Ethel, wife of Boy R. Allen, of Meriden, Conn. Mrs. Stroup survives her husband. Mr. and Mrs. Stroup lived a happy wedded life of 45 years together, and although the sudden separation is hard for her to bear, yet a comforting thought is that Mr. Stroup lived a devoted christian life. He was a kind and thoughtful husband and father, having done his part faithfully in raising a family of six children to become useful sons that are making their mark in life and daughters that became dutiful wives. The sympathy of all is extended the bereaved wife and family in this sad and dark hour of their lives. Geo. M. Stroup was elected associate judge of the Perry county November 3, 1896, serving one term of five years on the bench. He was a very worthy official. The church records do not show the date when he joined the denomination, but he was confirmed in his young manhood as a member of Zion's Lutheran church at Blain. He was faithful and one of the church's most substantial members. He serve as elder on the church council a great many years and was a member of the Sunday school. He was a good neighbor and citizen. A large circle of friends regret bis death. The funeral will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. from his late home. Services will be conducted in the Lutheran church by his pastor, Rev. J. C. Reighard. Interment in Union cemetery The pallbearers will be Andrew Clouse, Harry Wilt, Jefferson Neidigh, Solomon Hartman, Lenus Neidigh, D. C Bower."
