Stephan arrived in America in 1726 with his mother, Anna Katharine Hoffman, and his brother, Johann Michael Brecht; they settled first in Schoharie, NY and then in North Heidelberg Twp., Berks Co., PA (where he was one of the organizers of the North Heidelberg Moravian Church). Stephan had three wives, and the name of the first (David's mother) is not known. Elizabeth, widow of Stephan Brecht, died in 1751 per cemetery records for God's Acre, Union Church of North Heidelberg, 6 miles north of Robesonia, PA. "Rhineland Emigrants," Don Yoder, Ed. (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1981), p. 4: "The widow of Johann Brecht of Schriesheim was permitted to go to Pennsylvania in 1726 with her two sons Stephan and Johann Brecht. . . . Stephan Brecht, one of the emigrants of 1726, had children baptized in the Bern Reformed Church, Berks County (Elisabeth, 1738; Anna Maria, 1745)(Bern Church Records, 1738-1835, Hinke, Collection)."
http://www.berks.pa-roots.com/books/montgomery/b20.html offers: "The ancestor of this old and numerous family of Berks county was Stephen Brecht, a native of Germany, where he was born Feb. 17, 1692. He was one of the emigrants from the Palatinate who landed at New York about 1720. These emigrants first settled at Schoharie, N. Y., but because of the unbearable treatment they received at the hands of Governor Hunter, of the Province of New York, sought refuge elsewhere. Hearing of the justice accorded the settlers in Penn's Province, by the proprietors, and the fertility of the soil, excellent water and other advantages, many of them came into this district. Among them was (I) Stephen Brecht, who desired a tract of good land for himself and three sons. His land was granted him by John, Thomas and Richard Penn, lawful heirs of William Penn, on Nov. 27, 1745 [Recorded in Patent Book A., Vol. 12, page 349]. On this tract he made his home and died Sept. 24, 1747. His remains were interred in the North Heidelberg cemetery among the Moravians. His grave stone lies flat upon the ground, and is the oldest stone that can be found there. The inscription is in good condition. His will was made Jan. 6, 1746, by which his land was divided among his three sons: David, Hans Wendel and George Adam. To George Adam was given the homestead (now owned by Adam Dundore, of Obold), and the division of land between David and Hans Wendel was made soon after this date, and is recorded at Reading April 17, 1754, in Book A. Vol. 1, page 68."

Hawyse was heiress of Kidwelly Castle in Carmarthenshire, one of a line of
castles guarding the coastal road, built during the Norman advance in King
Henry I's reign. She "married into the powerful Marcher Lord family of de
Braose; but her husband died in a campaign in 1233, by which time Kidwelly
Castle was once again firmly in Welsh hands, and had been for two years,
Llywelyn having decided that appeasement would not work with Henry III.
The Welsh hung on to Kidwelly for a long time, and only after Hawise
married Patrick de Chaworth in 1244 did she find someone to get her castle
back for her. De Chaworth even managed to hold Kidwelly Castle during the
Welsh rising of 1257, though the town of Kidwelly was destroyed. But the
next year Patrick was killed in battle, and his estate went to his son
Payn, who began considerable rebuilding after his majority in about 1270."

Bower, near this place, shortly before 12 o'clock Friday night, Aug. 25, 1011, after an illness lasting more than seven months, due to the infirmities of old age. She was aged 77 years 10 months and 27 days. Mrs. Billman was a daughter of John and Elizabeth (Bower) Shumaker and was born in Spring township where the greater part of her life was spent. The deceased is survived by her husband and the following children: Clara (Mrs. Walter Weibley), of Carlisle; John and Daniel H., of Spring township; Aaron H , of Landisburg and Minnie, (Mrs. E. T. Bower), of near this place. Also, by two brothers, William H. Shumaker, of Harrisburg, and John Shumaker, of near New Kingston and one sister residing in Illinois. Mrs. Billman was a consistent christian woman, having been a member of Mt. Zion Lutheran church for many years. She was a loving mother, kind and affectionate, and will be greatly missed. She was tenderly cared for duriug her illness, by her husband and children. The last five months she tenderly waited upon by her daughter, Mrs. Bower."

[59547] Granville's obituary: "Granville Eugene Walls, Jr., 99, died peacefully at his home in Manset on June 1, 2025. 'Gene' was born on November 16, 1925, in Seal Cove to Granville Eugene and Lurlene (Rumill) Walls. Gene graduated in 1944 from Pemetic High School and soon enlisted into the Navy. He was in the Pacific Theatre on the ship, USS Freestone, APA 57. Gene did multiple trips to Manila in the Phillipines and to Okinawa. After the surrender of Japan, his ship entered Tokyo Harbor, and he witnessed the devastation of Nagasaki. He made several trips back to the U.S. to bring back troops. On his last trip they transited the Panama Canal and disembarked in Virginia. Once home, Gene acquired the skills of a boat builder and supervised the crew as they built lobster and pleasure boats. They built one small tugboat 'Little Toot' for Gary Moore and it made national TV one evening. Genes name is prominently mentioned in the pages of Boatbuilding on Mount Desert Island. After several decades, Gene transitioned into custom building. He built many houses around MDI. He was known for his craftmanship. He enjoyed building furniture and punts during his free time for his children, grandchildren and friends. In 1954 Gene married Betty Middleton and moved to Manset. They had three children: Laraine, Allan and Susan. In 1977, Gene married Marjorie 'Peggy' Trask Holt. They were married until Peggys death in 2016. Gene built a camp on Long Pond where he and Peggy enjoyed summers and falls entertaining family and friends. Gene enjoyed boat rides on the Pond and teaching the grandkids how to water ski. Periodically the porch became a barber shop when his brother-in-law, Chick Bond, would come over and they would cut each others hair. Gene had the more demanding part of that arrangement as Chick had a full head of hair and well, Gene was close to being bald. After selling the camp in 2013, Gene and Peggy enjoyed a few cruises and road trips, often with Genes sister, Eleanor, and her husband Gene Brown. Genes favorite past times were watching the MDI High School basketball games, the Red Sox, Patriots and Celtics games and he was an avid reader of history books. He was a member of the American Legion. Gene is survived by his daughter, Laraine (Walls) Wade and her husband, Dennis of Greenfield, MA and Stonington; son, Allan Walls and partner Marnie Saunders of Bar Harbor; Susan (Walls) Jackson and her husband, Lee of Oakfield; stepdaughters Deborah (Holt) Terreault of Seal Harbor and Wanda (Holt) Fernald and her husband, Stephen of Mount Desert,; 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Gene was predeceased by his wife, Peggy, stepson, David Holt and sisters Eleanor Brown and Betty Fernald."
