See "The Great Migration Begins" (Boston: NEHGS, 1995), Vol. 1, pp. 383-389. George came from Shrewsbury, England to Falmouth, Maine in 1630; was Representative to the General Court of Mass., 1663. See "New England Historic & Gen. Register," C102:169; "Brackett Gen.," by Herbert Bracket (Washington, D.C., 1907). George emigrated via Plymouth, England. His father, John, was a linen draper "of Stogursey, Somersetshire." {-also see articles in "N. E. Hist. & Genealogical Register," 102:169-177; 140:180-181 - giving data on his four marriages and his legal troubles in England.} George was one of the earliest inhabitants of present-day Portland, Maine; was residing at the mouth of the Spurwink River, Cape Elizabeth, 1630, where he claimed 2,000 acres which Sir Ferdinand Gorges had promised him as a condition of his emigration from England -- but he was ousted from this claim and located where the business section of the city stands today (near Hancock and Fore Streets); he led the struggle for an independent colony in Maine called Ligonia, and for 12 years served as its chief of state (until Massachusetts' claims prevailed in 1658); he was in and out of court for many years trying to assert his property claims; he served in the General Court and other offices. He was a "roundhead" and struggled with the Episcopalians. He died past age 90 and was probably past age 55 when he emigrated from England.
See "Penobscot Pioneers...Bray...," Philip Howard Gray (Camden: Penobscot Press, 1992), pp. 46-47. Also "History of Portland...," William Willis (Portland: Bailey & Noyes, 1865) on the web at http://www.usigs.org/library/books/me/Portland1865/Portland000.htm - cf. "Cleeve Family Registry," referenced under John Price, George's father-in-law (this volume reports "In 1618 at least, George Cleeve was employed by Thomas Lewis at the Sextry, or Sextree, an Inn which is still standing in Shrewsbury. Cleeve remained at Shrewsbury at least until 1624 and probably until he emigrated in 1630, although one source says his home when he emigrated was in Plymouth (Devonshire, Eng.). George Cleeve sailed from Bristol, England, April 1630 aboard the Swift, bound for Sace and Casco Bay, Maine."
"Great Migration Newsletter, Vol. 18, No. 4" (2009) offers: "Hannah Farber, 'The Rise and Fall of the Province of Lygonia, 1643-1658,' The New England Quarterly 82 (2009):490-513. Farber provides a clear narrative of the history of the Province of Lygonia, a jurisdiction of uncertain legitimacy which covered much of what is now coastal Maine from 1643 to 1658. Much of her story revolves around the activities and the characters of two of the more interesting of the early settlers of New England, Tthomas Morton {1622, Merrymount} [GMB 1:1299-1300] and George Cleeve {1630, Spurwink} [GMB 1:383-389]."
See "The Pioneers of Maine and New Hamphsire, 1623-1660," Charles Henry Pope (Baltimore, MD: Clearfield Co., reprinted 2002), pp.39-40.
A major article about George Cleeve is in "Brackett Genealogy...," Herbert I. Brackett (Washington, DC: Herbert I. Brackett, 1907).
