He was a life-long resident of Maine and a native of Montville. He was son of the late George Crosby Carter and Myra (Cates) Carter, formerly of Montvilie and Winterport. Mr. Carter graduated from Crosby High School in Belfast. He had been a salesman for most of his life. In his later years, he devoted is atentions tothe study of history, philosophy and ornithology. He was an active bird watcher, who had an encydopedic knowledge of tha marine bird life of the Casco Bay region. He was an active writer who has had pieces published in Downrast Magazine, Blair and Ketchum's Country Journal, and several college text books. . . . Mr. Carter is survived by his wife Loreta (Beal) Carter; three children, Mrs. Ronald (Jane) Cronin of Cape Elisabeth, Mrs. Richard (Barbara) Arbour of North Vassalboro and Gena Carter of Bangor; five grandchildren, Kenneth E. Cronin, Pamela B. Cronin and Jennifer L. Cronin all of Cape Elizabeth, Matthew G. Carter and Mark G. Carter, both of Bangor. . . . " Kenneth is son of George Crosby Carter (1881-1970) & Myra Cates (1879-1963; m. 8 June 1903 in Montville, Waldo Co., ME).

Susia was a milliner; they were married eight years when she d. s. p. In the 1910 census WIlliam is a widower and a farmer, living with his daughter Thelma R. (age 27) and grandson Laurence W. Bridges (age 5, born in Massachusetts). The 1880 census shows him living with his wife in his parents' household - he is a butcher and his wife Rosella is "sewing". "Biographical review : containing life sketches of leading citizens of Somerset, Piscataquis, Hancock, Washington, and Aroostook counties, Maine (1898)", pp. 661-62: "William B. Clement, one of the stirring business men of Penobscot, Hancock County, was born in this town, March 26, 1851, son of William and Silvia (Leach) Clement. His paternal grandfather, Daniel Clement, a native of Vork, Me., and a farmer and fisherman, settled in Penobscot at an early date, and cleared from the wilderness a large farm located on the Goshen shore. William Clement, the father, was born at the homestead. In early life he was a seafaring man. After succeeding to the home farm, he carried it on for many years, and lived to be eighty-six years old. Silvia Clement, his wife, who was a daughter of John and Abigail Leach, became the mother of two sons - Frank M. and William B. Frank M. Clement, who resides at the homestead, successively married Addie Littlefield and Inez Yarnum, and has two daughters - Flora and Rose. After finishing his studies in the district schools William B. Clement engaged in farm-ing, lumbering, and butchering, and for a number of years has supplied the people of Castine with meat. He married Rose Snow-man, who died leaving two children - Addie and Dele. He has supported the Republican party in politics since he cast his first Presdential vote for U. S. Grant in 1872, and he has ably filled several town offices."

She married James Howard Jr. on 31 Oct. 1800 in Farmington, Kennebec Co., ME. After he died in 1807, she returned to Martha's Vineyard. In Aug. 1836, she sold a small parcel of land and bake house at the harbor in Edgartown to Gorham & Fisher, merchants." No grave marker exists but it is thought she was buried in the Westside Cemetery with her family.

[25478] The 1880 census of Jackson, Richland Co., OH shows Josiah, a farmer, age 55 (parents b. in PA) with Eva (wife, 51, parents b. in PA) and children (all b. in OH) Emma (21), Nancy (19), Cassius (16), Willie (11) and Elva (4) - also in the household is a farm laborer, Adolph Hominy (17). "Richland Shield & Banner," 7 January 1888, Vol. LXX, No. 33: "Shelby. Mr. Josiah Gump, aged about sixty-three years, died [date omitted by correspondent]. He resided immediately east of Shelby upon a fine farm. He was a very estimable man, beloved by all who knew him. He was remarkably quiet and unassuming in his intercourse with his neighbors and friends. He was an official member of the Lutheran church, was twice married and left a widow and eight children." "History of Richland County, Ohio..." (Mansfield, OH: A. A. Graham & Co., 1880), p. 791: "Gump, Josiah, farmer and stock-raiser; he was born in Bedford Co., Penn., Nov. 29, 1824. His father, Benjamin Gump, hearing of Ohio and of its fertile lands, resolved to leave his native hills and bring his family to the frontier settlements and hew out for himself and family a home; he entered an 80-acre tract, and set to work to clear away the timber on which to build his new home; he hewed the logs, instead of leaving them round, as was customary in those early days ; he first built the center, and some years after added additions to each end; the west addition was occupied as carpenter and cabinet-maker shop for some years; the main part of this building, now occupied by Josiah Gump, is perhaps one of the oldest in Jackson Township, having been built fifty-three years; the trees which surround this building were planted by the elder Gump, and now they spread their branches far and wide; there is a large and beautiful pear-tree standing at the west end of the dwelling which the old gentleman raised from the seed, and of which he enjoyed the fruit for many seasons; during the last years of his life, he was much afflicted with rheumatism; he spent an active life, worked hard, and was 'gathered home' in 1870, aged 83 ; his wife, whose maiden name was Esther Smith, died some time previous ; three children survive them-Josiah and two sisters. Josiah has spent his youth on the farm; he is a plain, unassuming man, honest and industrious. He was married to Matilda Cline in 1843 ; they had seven children ; she died in 1864. On Nov. 18, 1855, by the Rev. Joel Grimm, at Tamaqua he was married to Maria Breiner, the first child of George and Cather (Culder) Breiner who was born in the West Penn, Pa, Nov. 24, 1831. They had ten children all of whom were born in the same house in which their father was born and which was erected by his grandfather when he settled in the township." David's obituary is in the "Daily Standard" 27 Sept 1904.
