[49308] "The Daily Item [Sunbury, PA]," 18 March 1941, p. 2: "Ward Rice, of 1108 N. Front Street, who returned to his native Pennsylvania 15 years ago after many years in business in the far west, died at 4 o'clock Monday afternoon in the Mary M. Packer hospital, following a two weeks' illness with complications. He was aged 84 years, 6 months and 23 days. His death breaks a marital union of more than a half century. Mr. Rice was born August 22, 1856, near New Bloomfield, Perry county, the son of William and Catherine Milligan Rice. After attending the New Bloomfield Academy, he came to Sunbury and entered the service of the First National Bank, where he received his early business training. In 1883 he went west to Illinois and then to California, and located finally in Pueblo, Colorado. A Republican, he was elected to office as Pueblo County treasurer. He engaged in banking for 15 years. After six years in the west, he came to Sunbury to wed Miss Flora Rockefeller, daughter of Judge and Mrs. William M. Rockefeller, October 2, 1889. After the wedding, Mr. and Mrs. Rice returned to Colorado, where they lived until 1902. They then moved to Los Angeles, and Hollywood, where they resided for a number of years. They returned to Sunbury 15 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Rice observed their golden wedding anniversary here October 2, 1939. He. was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and of all Masonic bodies. Mr. Rice is survived by his wife Mrs. Flora Rice, of 1108 N. Front street, and one son, Arthur W. Rice, and grandsons William Ward Rice and Robert G. Rice, all of Montclair, N.J.; one brother, Rev. H. G. Rice, of St. Augustine, Fla., and three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Rhinesmith, of Charles City, Ia.; Mrs. Caroline R. Flickinger, of Duluth, Minn., and Mrs. Lillie Peale, Lancaster."
